DataProtector connecting to a Virtual Tape Library

I have downloaded and installed Dataprotector.

We can create and restore physical tapes without issue, but if we connect Dataprotector to a virtual tape drive or tape library it will not read a virtual tape.

The error is:

[Major] From: MMA@ec2amaz-5vorqji "drive1"  Time: 3/15/2023 1:58:59 AM [90:52]      Tape10:3:0:1:0C     Cannot read from device ([87] The parameter is incorrect. )

Can you assist?

Guy

  • Hi Guy,

There should not be any difference between a physical library and a VTL. If the VTL is giving issues then it is most likely related to settings on this device. Maybe the output of "devbra -dev" run on the same MA client (can you share that here?) can help? But better would be to run this failing action with debugs and provide those to support after elvating a case.

  • Hi Guy,

You should be able to log a support case for your trial version. If you have any trouble with the support portal or with elevating the case then let me know and I'll check who can assist with that.

Hi All, I work with OP and we have now solved this.

Our virtual tapes used a 512KB block size and the virtual tapes were connected to the machine running Data Protector using an iscsi mount.
The default settings for iscsi mounting in windows is to use a max block size of 64kb. Once we located the correct registry key and modified it we were able to restore the tapes without incident.

The issue was not Data Protector at all.

  • Hi Chris,

Thank you so much for sharing this with everyone.

I'm assuming it is "MaxTransferLength" which you changed in the registry!? I did find a small note about it in our manuals about it: iSCSI drivers. If you could confirm then that may be helpful for others experiencing the same problem.

You may want to flag your final answer as "Verified Answer" if possible.

    Thanks!
