WORM COPY -SOFTWARE BASED OPTION AVILABLE IN HDDP

Hi All,

I want to know whether there is a way to enable WORM copying using the HPDP tool. I can see that HPDP supports storage-based media such as WORM. However, I have noticed that other backup tools include the same kind of WORM copy features.

HPDP : V10.30

    Hi,

If the question is whether WORM media are supported then the answer is: yes. This can be seen in the support matrix: Data Protector 10.30 Device Support Matrix. There's also a small note in the documentation: WORM media

The alternative to a permanent protection may be to keep track of the ejected media, so you know exactly which tape to import when required.

If the question was something else then please clarify.

  • Before posting here, I have raised Case 02548823.

As per the case update, I could not find any WORM copy option on the backup specifications. Is it visible only if we have WORM Capable tape library or device or media ??

To enable WORM Copy in Data Protector, you need to have a compatible tape library or device that supports this feature. Here are the steps to enable WORM Copy in Data Protector:

    1. Install and configure a WORM-capable tape library or device.
    2. Create a new backup job or modify an existing backup job.
    3. In the backup job settings, select the device that supports WORM Copy.
    4. Enable the WORM Copy option in the backup job settings.
    5. Configure the retention period for the WORM Copy. This determines how long the backup data will be retained and cannot be overwritten or deleted.
    6. Save the backup job settings.

Once the WORM Copy feature is enabled, any backup data written to the WORM-capable device will be protected from modification or deletion according.
to the retention period you configured. This ensures that the backup data is preserved and can be restored if needed, even in the event of a security breach or accidental data loss.

What exactly do you mean with "WORM copy option"?

There's nothing like an option to enable or disable WORM. A tape is either WORM or not. You should just make sure the media are either permanently protected or keep track of ejected/expired media very well so that you know which one to re-enter and import when required for a restore.

If I'm still not getting your question then please clarify.

  • Thank you for your clarification, now I Understood.

I had raised a case with micro focus earlier and the support engineer suggested the below steps to configure WORM Copy. So i wanted to confirm if there is such a option.

    ""Hello Thavakumar,

My name is Callixte from the Microfocus Data Protector Support team. I will be able to help you with this case 02548722.

WORM (write once, read many) is a data storage technology that allows information to be written to a medium a
single time and prevents the drive from erasing the data. WORM media are by design not rewritable because they are intended to
store data that you do not want to erase accidentally.
WORM media are supported on Windows, HP-UX, Linux, Solaris, and OpenVMS operating systems.

Kindly note, just a matter of deciding how it will be handled. Permanent protection may lead to a big IDB. If that's not desired then the
you will need to take precautions to make you know exactly what is on which tape after it has been ejected and stored, so it can be imported when needed.
