Default value for CATALYST_PAYLOAD_CHECKSUM and CATALYST_BODY_PAYLOAD_COMPRESSION in DP 10.x

This is an enhancement request to enable Data Protector to support to have the default settings in omnirc changed from:

# Specifies if checksum values are created for data packets
# CATALYST_PAYLOAD_CHECKSUM:<1-ENABLE/0-DISABLE>
#CATALYST_PAYLOAD_CHECKSUM:1

# Specifies if messages are compressed between client and server
# CATALYST_BODY_PAYLOAD_COMPRESSION:<1-ENABLE/0-DISABLE>

to

Enabling compression and checksums will add some overhead and will slow the backup down.
HPE recommends using Enabled values only in WAN environment:

CATALYST_PAYLOAD_CHECKSUM

When StoreOnce Catalyst data payloads are transferred, a StoreOnce Catalyst payload checksum is created to ensure data integrity. This checksum is only required for WAN-based transfers where network layer checksums are insufficient. LAN and Catalyst over Fibre Channel backup have sufficient checksum capabilities.

Set to Enable for WAN environments and Disable for LAN/Catalyst over Fibre Channel.

 

CATALYST_BODY_PAYLOAD_COMPRESSION

StoreOnce Catalyst data payloads can be compressed when they are transferred. Compression is beneficial for WAN-based transfers where bandwidth is often limited but compression is not necessary for LAN and Catalyst over FibreChannel data transfers.

Set to Enable for WAN environments and Disable for LAN/Catalyst over Fibre Channel.

In omnirc file parameters CATALYST_PAYLOAD_CHECKSUM and CATALYST_BODY_PAYLOAD_COMPRESSION have the value Enable by default.

Since these parameters are not described in the user manual for Data Protector and most users are not familiar with it, then I think that the default values should follow the HPE recommendations.

 

Similar enhancement request (QCCR2A71860)  has been implemented in Patch Release: DP-9.07_110.
