Support Tip: Backup & Restore ownership on Linux

The following is focussing on the backup situation, but the same exists for restore.

The user that will run the VBDA requires read access permissions to be able to read the files (and directories) from the file system. So the question is: which user will start the VBDA? This depends on multiple factors. First of all there is the ownership of the backup and secondly there are the user rights of the owner. And if there is no ownership defined then the user that is starting the backup (GUI or CLI) will be the owner. The backup ownership can be defined in the Advanced Backup Specifcation Options. The following table is showing which user will start the VBDA:

  • root
  • backup owner defined in the backup specification
  • user that is starting the backup from the GUI or CLI

Ownership defined in Backup Spec No Ownership defined in Backup Spec
Owner has "Backup as Root" right root
Backup starter has "Backup as Root" right root
Owner does not have "Backup as Root" right Backup owner
Backup starter does not have "Backup as Root" right Backup starter

As said, the same principle exists for restores and the User rights are defined in the User group to which the user that starts the VBDA belongs to.

Please note that also a Windows user, e.g. the user that is starting a GUI, can have these "Backup as Root" and "Restore as Root" rights assigned.
