Rate limit per sender or client IP with SMG or GroupWise?

Hello,

we want to restrict the number of mails a user can send per day (or another time unit), so the spam an attacker can send, using a phished account, will be limited.

I didn´t find a setting in GroupWise GWIA to do this, if you can tell me, that would be easiest. The Users authenticate at the GWIA for sending over SMTP.

If not the GWIA can the SMG limit the sent mails per user or sender email address to 1000 mails a day for example?

Best regards,

Anke

Unfortunately, there is no option to restrict per day. I suggest to create an exchange idea.

The only setting you can use is client options (user, post office, domain level).

There you can limit maximum recipients. But it is a general limit - internal AND external recipients. However it is smart enough to count members of distribution lists ...

    Thank you Diethmar,

and there are no limits per hour or minute either?

I thought the Maximum Recipients Allowed in GroupWise was to limit the number of recipients in 1 mail, is that so?

    Thank you,

    Anke

You are right, Anke. This is per mail. However if there is an attack then maybe even this limit can help.

Does it really help? I assume - no!

Why? Attacks will happen via SMTP and relaying. A user password has been hacked. So a lot of mails will be relayed via your mail gateway using a valid authentication. And relayed mails will not use "GroupWise client options".

I do not have a real solution, maybe a small workaround. I use GroupWise monitor to check GWIA directories. If there are many mails waiting (send or defer) then I will get an alert. You can use any other monitoring tool to check these directories ...
