iprint client installed from Intune pr. device - printer install ikon not working on Chrome or Edge

Hi,

I am having an issue installing iPrint Client (6.22.1) from Microsoft Intune. If the client is installed before user logon – as a step in the autopilot ESP, the client install without any errors but when the user try to install a printer from the iPrint URL the printer install icon is not working. There is no popup and the user have no way to install the printer.
I found out, that if the installation is happening AFTER the user has logged in and got the desktop etc. then everything works as it should. It looks like the iPrint client integration with the browser is faulty if the installation of the client happened before the user has actually logged in.
I wonder if there is a way to change the installation? I simply downloaded the file (nipp-s.exe) from my server – an iprint appliance 4.2. I have packed the file as an .intunewin package and deployed from Intune.
Is there a way to ‘repair’ the connection between the iPrint client and the browser if it ‘went wrong’ as described above?

Unfortunately I don’t have Zenworks anymore… Intune is all we have.. : -)

Thanks.

    Hi again,

I have now found a solution to this ‘problem’. The reason that it happens, is that iPrint client needs a complete user login to install completely. The way user software is being installed on machines registered med Microsoft Intune Autopilot and where it is Microsoft Intune which is installing the software on the machine, is problematic in this relation as the desktop is not shown. Intune Enrollment Status Page (ESP) shows the installation status – for the user as the user logs-in in continuation for Windows 10 first login experience.

As long as it shows it, the desktop is somewhat hidden behind it and not accessible as it usually is when a user completes login. All software is installed ‘behind’ this screen. The ESP screen cannot be hidden nor deselected.

I guess iPrint Client cannot access all the places it needs to write in and so it wont work later when trying to install a printer from the Printers URL. There is no error reported from the iPrint Client installation and Intune regard it as successful.

I must say that I have many other programs installed this way on our machines. They all install fine. All but the iPrint client. Microsoft Intune is the only tool I have to install software with, and I cannot delay the installation in it. I tried to script the installation by conditioning existence of the Winlogon process, but I guess that this process is already running ‘behind’ the ESP screen and iPrint client again gets installed ‘premature’ … and fails to install printers later.

Manually download and install from the Printers URL works and corrects the problem but many of our machines are Shared PC’s where the user doesn’t have administrative rights and thus cannot install the iprint Client again manually.

The solution for us was to assign the client as ‘Available’ in Intune. I am using the Winapp 32 method to pack the installation in Intune. I have configured the installation to run (silently) with system rights. This seams to solve the issue.

I think that it may be the time for micro focus to ‘modernize’ the installation of the iPrint client. Microsoft Intune is in use by millions of users all around the world today. iPrint is really a nice print server. We have been using it since 2012. The installer looks the same as it did for 10 years ago… the name is still ‘Windows 8’ if one looks for it I the iprint appliance. There are other and newer print solutions out there – ipp print as well, like Microsoft Universal Print which is in our license AND is a ‘true Cloud’ by the way… it will be a shame to stop using iprint because of all those difficulties installing it.
