Perform Accounting Using iPrint and PaperCut

This document explains how to configure PaperCut accounting solution on Open Enterprise Server or iPrint Appliance for iPrint Printers and iPrint Direct Printers.

iPrint Printers: The print jobs are sent to the iPrint print server and then to physical printer.

iPrint Direct Printers: The print jobs are sent directly to the physical printer.

iPrint Printer Accounting



To perform iPrint Printer accounting, configure PaperCut Primary server on Open Enterprise Server (with iPrint configured) or iPrint Appliance.

To configure PaperCut Primary Server: http://www.papercut.com/products/ng/manual/ch-installation-novell.html

On successful configuration of the PaperCut primary server, iPrint jobs for iPrint Printers will get accounted.

iPrint Direct Printer Accounting



Perform the following tasks:

    1. Configure the PaperCut primary server on your Open Enterprise Server or iPrint Appliance. To verify if the Primary server is configured successfully, perform the following:

        • Administrators can access the Primary server.

        • Printers on this server are being tracked.

        • Users are allowed to log in to the user pages from their workstations.

      • Ensure port 9191 is open to communicate with the secondary server.

 

    1. The iPrint Direct Printers are installed on Windows and Mac machines. You must configure the PaperCut secondary server on these machines.




Configuring the PaperCut Secondary Server on Windows Machines



A. Installing the print provider software on the secondary server:

Install the print provider software onto the secondary server. On a Windows server or workstation, this is done by selecting the "Secondary Print Server" option in the installation wizard.

Note: If the PaperCut primary server software was previously installed on the Windows server or workstation it must be uninstalled prior to installing the Secondary server software.

    1. Run pcng-setup.exe and click Next.

    1. Accept the license and click Next.

    1. Select "Secondary print server installation" from drop box and click Next.

    1. Click Finish to complete the installation.

B. Configuring print provider to contact the primary server:

The Print Provider on the secondary server needs to know where the primary server is installed. The location of the print-provider.conf is "app-path\providers\print\win".

    1. In the print-provider.conf file locate the line starting with "ApplicationServer= " and change the localhost to the name or IP address of the Primary PaperCut Server.

    1. Restart either the PaperCut Print Provider service or the Secondary server to detect the new configuration.




On successful configuration jobs printed through the iPrint Direct Printers will get accounted.

Configuring the PaperCut Secondary Server on Mac Machines



A. Installing the print provider software on the secondary server:

Install the print provider software onto the secondary server. Download the latest Mac DMG disk image and execute the contained installer called PaperCut NG Secondary Server Installation.pkg.

    1. Execute pcng-setup-mac.dmg and click "PaperCut NG Secondary Server Install.pkg".

    1. Click Continue.

    1. Click Continue and then click Agree to accept the license agreement.

    1. Click Install and complete the installation.

B. Configuring print provider to contact the primary server:

The Print Provider on the secondary server needs to know where the primary server is installed.

The location of the print-provider.conf is "app-path/providers/print/ mac/print-provider.conf".

    1. In the print-provider.conf file locate the line starting with "ApplicationServer=" and change localhost to the name or IP address of the Primary PaperCut Server.

    1. Save the file and exit the text editor.




C. Enabling iPrint Direct Printers for accounting:

Double-Click on the command script, the path is /Applications/PaperCut NG/Control Printer Monitoring.command, and enable monitoring for the Direct Printers.

Note: Do not enable iPrint Printers that are enabled on the server-side for accounting. Because it will cause the user to be charged twice.

Whenever a iPrint Direct Printer is installed on the Mac machine, you must enable accounting using the above commands.On successful configuration, jobs printed through the iPrint Direct Printers will get accounted.

PRINTER LIST:



Printers enbled for accounting are now listed in the format as mentioned below under Printer list section of Primary PaperCut Server,

For iPrint Printers:

(Open Enterprise Server /iPrint Appliance) IP OR DNS name\printer _name

For iPrint Direct Printers, installed on Windows:

computer name\printer_name

For iPrint Direct Printers, installed on Mac:

Hostname\printer_name

Note: If iPrint Direct Printers are installed on multiple workstations(windows and mac) the Printer list in the Primary Papercut server will list those printers that many number of times.

For example:
If two iPrint Direct Printers are installed on 100 workstations, we will see 200 printer names under the Printer list section.
