Is that the only line?   Where is the 1st line of   #!/bin/bash

as an example, my template.sh

I thought I could just add the rights command shown above and it would just work...

So you've got a script called  ?.sh   and it is chmod +x    with

#!/bin/bash
rights -f /media/nss/DATA/VOL1/Office -r RWCEMF trustee temp2.OU

?

Yes, and it runs but it can't find /media/nss/DATA/VOL1/Office when the command is run from a script.

ah. Is this even when run from the same user state as the command was run?    hmm

A manually created rights line in a script works for me on the 2018.3 box I could play on.

Are you generating the target folder on the fly with some variables?

The actual rights command is as I showed it. I used a spreadsheet to map trustees and rights to directories and used that info to create the actual rights command in the spreadsheet.

I don't know why the script is not working for me on my 2018.3 box. While I'm curious, I had a migration that needed to be completed so I bit the bullet and copied/pasted about 200 rights commands into my PuTTY session. That did the job although a script would have been much easier. 

If I get a chance I'll explore further to see if I can figure out why it didn't work.

Sometimes we just have to do the IBM method (It's Better Manually, I even had that as a t-shirt as a kid of my IBMer dad)

per chance, did you create the script on a Windows box?  If so, did you run the dos2unix command against it?
