When trying to rename any folder we are getting error - action cannot be completed because folder or file in it is open by another program

Hi,

Recently we are seeing this error - whenever we rename any folder we are getting error - action cannot be completed because folder or file in it is open by another program. If I create a new folder, I can rename it. But any existing folder is giving this error when we rename it. Happens with all folder. Tried rebooting the OES server. Still the error is seen.

Thanks in advance for any help

Client is OES Client for Open Enterprise Server 2 SP7 (IR1) on Windows 10 22H2. Renaming is done from Windows explorer.

As the error says,  something must have that folder open, and it grabs that hook after the server reboot as it reconnects.

It could be just another Explorer window, it could be an app trying to open or save a file.

If it is a file open in that folder, it is easy to find. In a browser session, login to NoRM, serverHost/IP:8009, Manage NCP Services, Manage Shares, click on the little info I in front of the volume in question, Open File Information button, the search (Ctrl-F) for the folder in question,  and that will show you who has a file open in the folder.

That only applies for apps that put a lock on the file and therefor not if they only have the folder open without anything open.  Ex viewing an image with IrfanView doesn't show.

Knowing the server version would also help in further options.

I have recently encountered a similar error. I was pretty sure nothing on my workstation had access to the file. Finally, I closed all opened Windows File Explorers then opened a new one. The issue had been resolved.

Do you have the Details pane turned on in Windows Explorer?  We had enough issues with the Details pane that I disabled it by default on all our workstations.  Turn it off and see if that resolves the issue.  You could also try turning off the Preview pane.  I left it alone as it usually doesn't cause problems, but who knows if Microsoft changed something.

    Hello Ken Etter,

Thanks for your reply. It was the Preview Pane which was ON  and the details Pane which caused this this issue. When Preview Pane was switched off and switch to List view then I was able to rename those folders. Don't know whether this is due to recent Windows update or not.

Just bizzare. Was going nowhere trying to figure this out. (BTW creating new folders and renaming it works for some reason)

    Thanks
