QuickTID 1.01

System requirements: Win95, Win98 or WinNT

QuickTID was designed to provide fast access to Novell Technical Information Documents (TIDs). It will allow you to call a TID without opening your Web browser and surfing to the Novell Knowledgebase first. Instead, it will open your default browser and redirect you directly to the specific TID on its own after you've supplied the TID Number. This mechanism proves to be useful, if one receives references to specific TIDs in an email or news posting:

"Check TID 0123456. It may solve your problem."

With QuickTID, you need to copy the TID Number and paste it to the QuickTID entry field only. Clicking on the 'Go' button will do the rest.

Upon first start of the executable (quicktid.exe) an icon is placed into the system tray. To load a TID,click with the left mouse button on the icon placed in the system tray. This will cause a small input window - the QuickTID window - to popup in the right upper corner of your screen.

Enter the TID number (e.g. 0123456) in the drop down list and press the 'Go' button. QuickTID will open your default web browser and load the appropriate TID page if found on the Knowledge Web Server. QuickTID does not come with a browser of its own.

If you want to hide the QuickTID window, click the 'x' button. If you need to check for another TID, click on the QuickTID icon in the system tray. This will cause the QuickTID box to reappear.

Every TID number you've accessed will be saved in the in the drop down list for later access and additionally in a history file ('quicktid.lst' in the QuickTID installation directory). Any time you restart QuickTID,this file will be read to build the drop down list. To purge the list and the history file, right click on the QuickTID tray icon and choose 'Clear List of TIDs'. The file will be generated whenever you call a TID for the first time either after first start of QuickTID or after you've purged the list.

Upon first start of QuickTID the file 'quicktid.ini' is created in the directory where you've installed QuickTID, by default 'c:\Programs\QuickTID'. Quicktid.ini contains the main URL part of the CGI script to be used for calling the TID document. By default it points to 'http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/tidfinder.cgi?'.

If Novell ever decides to change the URL or rename the CGI file responsible for loading TIDs over the web, you can change the URL by either editing quicktid.ini manually or by right clicking on the QuickTID tray icon and choosing 'Set URL/CGI' from the menu. If you edit the ini file manually, changes will take effect the next time you start QuickTID. If you've messed up the URL accidentally and QuickTID refuses to load any TIDs, delete the file quicktid.ini. Upon next restart, QuickTID will generate a new quicktid.ini containing the above-mentioned URL.

When reading several TIDs, you may want to have the QuickTID data entry box stay on top of all visible windows. Clicking on the QuickTID icon and choosing 'Always on top' from the menu can achieve this. The menu option will be checked to indicate this status. If you want to disable this feature, simply click on the menu option again.

To exit the application, press the right mouse button and choose 'Exit'.
