OK, just realized that the -610 eDirectory error is for an illegal NDS name.
Reran the proxy reset without the leading '.' for the admin user and it
still failed with an error NDS -601 and a Proxy result = 15. Still no
NSMProxy object. Tried several server for the LDAP connection with the same
    results.

    Joe,

Is SLP configured correctly on your Engine server, to permit the local
NDS client to resolve server and object names?

Yes, SLP is configured and running on the storage manager engine server It
is configured as a client and not as a DA.

Create the deleted proxy object first, and then run through these steps
    again.

OK, that fixed the engine start on the server. Created the NSMProxy account
as a ccx-ProxyAccount Object Class. Reran the reset on the server, and the
engine started. Now logging in from a workstation as the admin user fails.
The engine log states the result of the login as 54. No idea what that
    means.

The NSMAdmin eDir group was never deleted or recreated. The group exists and
the admin user is a member of that group. Does the proxy reset also attempt
to create the NSMAdmin group? Is so than it wouls have failed in doing that.
The reults of the proxy result did return two failed lines with a
    rc=0x00008801.

Error '54' is an Access Denied error. Does your "NSM Admins" group still
exist? Make sure it does, and that the user you're attempting to log in
as is a member of that group.

No, the "--force-proxy-reset" option does not touch that group -- only
    the proxy object.

Has the proxy object been granted supervisor rights at the root of your
tree? If that trustee assignment is missing, that would also generate
the "Access Denied" error you're getting.

The NSMAdmins group exists. However the NSMProxy account did not have rights
to the ROOT of the Tree. Assigned that right, retsrted the engine, and all
    is back.

    Thanks all for the guidance,
    JoeK
