Copy backup to tape job failing

Hi

I am seeing the following issue when trying to copy a 600Gb backup to a LTO4 tape that should have the capacity:

The size of the backup it its copying is seen in the screenshot below:

Can someone explain why the copy tape job is not fitting onto the LTO4 tape?

Smaller backups fit so why not this one when it should be within the 745Gb capacity reported by VMX for the LTO4 tape.  The tape autoloader used is a Dell Powervault 124T LTO4 SAS

Regards

Marc

A LTO4 tape has a native capacity of 400 GB.
The free space displayed by VM Explorer is based on compression ratios from the past and cannot be projected into the future.
I suggest to add a second tape to the pool and let the backup span to the second tape.

Just spotted this had a reply!

    LTO3 has a native capacity of 400Gb.  LTO4 should have 800Gb?

I though VM Explorer did not have tape spanning?

Correct, LTO 4 tapes have a native capacity of 800 GB, my bad.
So you are right that the data should fit.

However, the capacity could be lower in case the tape drive is not in streaming mode.
Please keep in mind that LTO 4 has a lowest native data rate of 40 MB/s and if you are below that you will wear out the drive and waste capacity on the media due to the start / stop mode.

So if you are below 40 MB/s, you should make sure to enhance this. One common reason is that the disk the data is read from is too slow.

Tape spanning is available since VM Explorer 6.2.001.
