Backup Hyper-v VM to a network share directly

Hello everyone,

I'd like to backup our Hyper-V VMs directly from the Hyper-V server to a network share.

I know that I can configure a network map in the settings, but if I understood the documentation correctly this means that the VM explorer server will act as a "bridge" between the hyper-v server and the network share.

Since I am  using it to backup remote sites that have their own DR share, with this configuration it would mean that all of the backup traffic will go through our WAN and back.

I tried to create a symbolic link from the c:\ drive of the hyper-v server to the smb share to trick hp explorer into thinking that I am backing up locally but unfortunately when HP explorer checks for free space it returns the free space of the C: drive instead of the SMB share.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Thanks,
GB

You need to map the network drive.

Sorry, but that does not work. I mapped a drive to a network share and then tried to create a backup. VM Explorer does not see that drive letter. It only presents the local drive letters. I even tried to create a symbolic link in Windows and it failed saying that it cannot find it.

In order to get a network drive to work, you have to go into VM Explorer settings in the Network Drives menu, you have to add your network drive there. Once you add it in that menu, then you can try to make your backup and when selecting the destination, VM Explorer will see your network drive letter.
