Incremental backup failed

Incremental backups are failing for about half of our VMs, the task results in a warning with this message:

The Backup has finished successfully, but: It was not possible to transfer only incremental data for "server.vmdk" disk, therefore full disk data were transferred.

We have enough disk space to keep a couple of full backups, but we would obviously prefer to use incremental backups for those VMs as well. Any ideas what to check or what actions to take to fix this?
