What's new with AppManager Modules

AppManager is a constantly evolving product. The product area with the fastest change is the monitoring module packs. I often encourage customers to go to the modules page and sort by published to review what has been released and see if any of the updates would apply to their environment. (See the link below mynetiq login required to view.)

In case you haven’t reviewed the new modules released in the last 6 months, I am going to briefly cover what has been done. Rather than covering each individual module separately, I am going to approach it from the three major reasons to update the modules from a customer point of view.

  1. Enhanced Version support NetIQ AppManager modules are regularly updated following new versions of hardware and software.

  • Product Fixes I tell customers to review the readme because these fixes include not only the easy to detect issues but some of the fixes are much harder to detect. One example I seen recently is an incorrect calculation for data collection that was slightly off.

  • General Enhancements This would include product enhancements from customer requests such as having a new Knowledge Script monitor a counter that wasn’t previously monitored.

Enhanced Version Support:

AppManager for Microsoft Internet Information Services 7.4

  • IIS version 8.5

  • Windows Server 2012 R2

One highlight from the table is the module support for Windows 2012 R2 is nearly complete.

Product fixes:

AppManager for Microsoft Internet Information Services 7.4

  • IIS 6.0 discovery fails on Windows Server 2003

  • Unable to set the event severity in IIS_SSLCertMon for an unavailable valid SSL certificate

  • IIS_HTTPStatistics fail to monitor total number of connections to a server

  • WebLogicSvrUNIX_Memory

AppManager for Microsoft Internet Information Services 7.4

AppManager for Cisco Unified Communications Management

Knowledge Script

AppManager for Avaya Communication Manager Hotfix

  • Renaming Avaya trunks cause AppManager to stop monitoring the trunks

  • Trunk Groups with duplicate names are not displayed

  • Knowledge Scripts not collecting data, and AvayaCM is sharply limited in the number of simultaneous “get requests” that can be processed.

  • AvayaCM always reports LSP Status against 1 LSP

AppManager Connector for IBM Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus 7.5

  • Performance improvement

  • Failed to upgrade if connector was installed on a drive other than C.

At a quick glance of the above table, it can be noted that the AppManager for Windows had the most issues addressed. I would expect this since it is the most widely used module by customers. There were also two releases of this module.

General Enhancements:

AppManager for Oracle WebLogic Server UNIX 8.0

  • Enhanced documentation of proper configuration settings for product setup.

AppManager for Microsoft Internet Information Services 7.4

  • Recommended Knowledge Script group to use as a start point for monitoring

AppManager for Cisco Unified Communications Management

  • Added CiscoUCM Scalability Improvements

  • GeneralCounter does not display the names of monitored counters

NetIQ Module Builder Editor 1.1

  • Ability to modify the default KS category name when creating a module.

AppManager for Microsoft Windows

  • Ability to customize space carriage returns in Action_WriteMsgtoFile

For uses of the Cisco Unified Communications module, the GeneralCounter script is a powerful addition to the monitoring capabilities. The GeneralCounter allows customers to event and gather data on any Cisco defined performance counter without needing a specific Knowledge Script for that counter.

As you can see there has been a lot of module activity in the last quarter. For further information, the module can be downloaded and extracted from the first link in the article or all the module documentation is available from the link below.
