Patch Smarter with DCA to Reduce Your Risk Exposure

by in IT Operations Management

In case you haven't heard by now, Micro Focus is currently offering a special program for existing Server Automation (SA) customers. For a limited time, existing SA customers can exchange their Server Automation licenses for Micro Focus' Data Center Automation (DCA) Premium edition licenses at no cost. That's right, you'll get a no cost, one-to-one license exchange of your existing SA licenses to our DCA Premium license!

With this current license exchange program, there has never been a better time for you to get your hands on DCA and discover the additional features and benefits that it provides over SA. Over the next few weeks, I'll be posting a 4 part blog series discussing key areas where DCA delivers additional value beyond what Server Automation is capable of. This week I'll be discussing how DCA helps you patch smarter to reduce risks within your datacenter.

So what makes DCA's patching capabilities "smarter" than SA? Well, for starters, DCA provides a comprehensive view of the current risk state of your datacenter through its risk dashboard.

DCA's risk dashboard combines scan data, vendor patch metadata, and information from the National Vulnerability Database (NVD) including the Common Vulnerability Security Score (CVSS) to make it easier for you to filter out patch "noise". What do I mean by patch "noise"? By combining this information, DCA helps you quickly evaluate which patches are truly critical to reducing your overall risk exposure and which patches can be installed at a later time. In addition, the risk dashboard gives you key insights such as the number of resources affected by key risks, the resource types that are affected, the age of the vulnerability (older vulnerabilities are easier to exploit) as well as weekly trends so that you can monitor your patching progress.

While the risk dashboard helps you to assess and prioritize critical patches, DCA's Service-Level Objective (SLO) based scheduler makes it easy for you to setup automated scan and remediation actions, further streamlining your patching process.

DCA's scheduler reduces the complexity, miscommunication, and manual handoffs that often accompany trying to coordinate scan and remediation actions on a group of resources. Within DCA, resource owners or operations personnel create resource groups (for example, a group of Linux servers) and then setup the maintenance window(s) for that group. On the patch side, when a new patch policy is created the owner will set the measurement SLO and remediation SLO for the patch policy. Measurement SLOs define how often a resource or resource group should be scanned, and remediation SLOs define the window in which the patch should be applied. Now comes the magic - once a patch policy is assigned to a resource group, DCA's scheduler automatically sets up the scan and/or remediation actions based on the SLOs from the patch policy and the maintenance window on the resource group! That's it - easy peasy!

With DCA's risk dashboard and SLO-based scan and remediation actions, you can continuously scan, report on, and remediate vulnerabilities within your datacenter. But that's not all - DCA also has some great integrations and extensibility features that allow you to use DCA functionality with your existing tools and within your custom infrastructure processes. Stay tuned to this blog series for more information on those features.

One more thing I'd like to mention - you may have heard that DCA won a second consecutive gold medal in Info-Tech's Software Reviews for 2020. Well not only did DCA win the gold, but it also was the leader in several categories based on real end user feedback - including patching automation and business value created. So if you don't feel like taking my word that DCA can deliver a ton of value to your organization, take a look at the full Info-Tech Quadrant report to see what actual users think about DCA.
