What is AIOps?
From the most basic definition the term, AIOps stands for “artificial intelligence for IT operations," and was coined by Gartner in 2017. However, just defining what the name is doesn’t really tell us much about what AIOps actually DOES and HOW MUCH it’s really affecting our everyday lives.
How is AIOps affecting life today?
AI seems to be everywhere nowadays.
From retail to airlines, to hospitality groups, customer experiences are being improved with the help of AI. Today, intuitive chatbots are now able to provide customers with contextually relevant information to help acquire goods, services, or to make decisions faster.
Automotive manufacturers around the globe are racing to improve driving experiences and safety by providing fully autonomous vehicle options.
Healthcare companies are using AI to help prevent diseases by automating the process of diagnosing and identifying high-risk patient groups.
Even, the agriculture industry is utilizing AI to help automate processes, drive higher operating efficiency, and help to combat farming labor shortages in some areas of the globe.
How do I get started with AIOps?
The first thing in understanding how to be successful with AIOps is to understand the requirements.
According to industry analyst firm Enterprise Management Associates (EMA), AIOps solutions should address the 5 key capabilities shown in Figure 1 below. Those are:
- The ability to assimilate data from cross-domain sources in high data volumes
- Provide access to multiple data types (e.g. events, metrics, KPIs, logs, configuration, etc.
- Utilization of self-learning to deliver predictive, prescriptive, and if/then insights
- Act as a strategic overlay that aggregates multiple monitoring tools and other investments
- Support traditional, private, public, and multi-cloud environment
Assimilation of data from across cross-domain sources in high data volumes
We are living in a data explosion age. Everything is expected to be connected and provide analytics to improve the functions of a device or service. The undeniable fact is that data loads are becoming so large and distributed across hybrid environments that IT Operations teams cannot manually evaluate all this data.
In order to start understanding which data is most important, these teams need a platform in place that can collect and store all monitoring data from traditional, virtual, private, public and multi-cloud estates into one centralized data lake. This helps to improve the quality of data which is one of the main roadblocks to implementing AIOps as defined in EMA’s research.
Provide access to multiple data types
The next step is to assure that all monitoring data types are accessible. There many types of monitoring data that provide context to how business services are performing. IT Operations teams need to be collecting and providing access at will to ALL data types (logs, events, metrics, topology, etc.) in order understand how this data is correlated and how it’s impacting business services, applications, and the underlying infrastructure components.
Utilization of self-learning to deliver predictive, prescriptive, and If/Then insights
A true AIOps solution should be able to collect, store, and make sense of all your operational data predicting when issues are likely to occur, help pinpoint those issues, and make prescriptive suggestions on how to remediate the scenario using automation.
Act as a strategic overlay that aggregates multiple monitoring tools and other investments
Most IT Operations teams today are utilizing dozens of tools for performance and availability monitoring across applications, networks, databases, traditional and cloud infrastructures. To be exact, EMA’s research show this number of monitoring tools has grown on average from 15 tools in 2016 to 23 monitoring tools in 2018. This is often attributed to integration limitations between monitoring tools and/or different team's preferences in software vendors. This compartmentalized approach leads to wasted time in war room meetings hashing out which group is responsible for an incident or outage. A big step in getting AIOps right is bringing data from ALL monitoring tools into a single view, along with providing business service context behind this data. This helps to eliminate those lengthy war room meetings, saving IT Operations teams hours of productivity and improving their ability to align workloads to business priorities.
Support for traditional, private, public, and multi-cloud environments
As Hybrid IT environments continue to expand with the adoption of new technologies, it is imperative that IT Operations teams be able to collect, store, and analyze all data relevant data across these different environments. This again helps to assure data consistency and quality and guarantees there are no blind spots in the monitoring of business services and applications.
What benefits does AIOps provide?
There are several benefits that AIOps can provide, including improved employee and customer experiences, improved MTTR by as much as 65%, and 70% faster new service delivery.
