Rich text fields mess up Excel data queries

We have several dashboards that depend on using the Excel data query feature to fetch data using SBM listing reports.

We just enabled rich text for some fields. BIG MISTAKE, except for managers who like pretty fields.

EVERY line break in the rich text starts a new row in Excel. This means we cannot keep the data aligned. Does anyone know how to massage the data query so this doesn't happen, or does anyone have an Excel macro that will cure the problem?

I've seen the defect reports showing problems with Rich Text in reports exported to Excel - showing HTML or otherwise blowing up. This may be the data query manifestation of the same underlying problem.

I'm hoping that I can find a way to have a hidden shadow field that copies the rich text into plain text so I can use that field in the Excel data extract. Has anybody done this?
