Problem:

When trying to use Modernization Workbench, the Oracle listener starts for a few seconds then stops.  This stops access to any workspace by Modernization Workbench.  How can this be corrected?

Resolution:

The probable reason for this is an incorrect HOST entry in the Listener.ORA and TNSNames.ORA files.  To overcome the problem, open the properties of "My Computer" and open the Computer Name tab.  Make sure the exact name from this tab is entered in both of the Listener.ORA and TNSNames.ORA files.

For example - Listener.ORA....

LISTENER =
  (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
      (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1521))
      (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = NWB-PHMW3211G.microfocus.com)(PORT = 1521))
    )
  )

For Example - TNSNames.ORA......

RMW_REPOSITORY =
  (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = NWB-PHMW3211G.microfocus.com)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
      (SERVER = DEDICATED)
      (SID = DB11GR2)
    )
  )

The HOST entries must be the same and are "CASE SENSITIVE", as per the examples above.

When the files have been amended, in the Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

 - Stop the Oracle Service
 - Re-start the Oracle Service
 - Start the Listener service
