Anyone using/configuring Octane for the full four levels of Scale Agile particularly Capabilities

We're starting a significant programme of change and the current Epic, Feature, User Story structure feels a little tight for us.

Our development methodology is the Scale Agile Framework (SAFe) and its full configuration it breaks work into Epic, Capability, Feature, and User Story.

That feels a better and more structured set up for what we're doing (where we have a number of initiatives within the program, each likely to consist of one or more features consisting of one or more user stories).

How do we configure Octane to allow for Capabilities?

If we can't how has the community configured/used Octane to support SAFe in this regard?

Re: Anyone using/configuring Octane for the full four levels of Scale Agile particularly Capabilitie

Hi Mark,

In general, the backlog levels correspond primarily to the scope of work, where:

  • Story - Represents a scope of work to be completed within a sprint\Iteration
  • Feature - Represents a scope of work to be completed within a Release\PI
  • Epic - Represents a scope of work to be completed within several Releases\PIs or represents a collection of Features of the same Release\PI.

SAFe implementors usually distinguish Capabilities and Enablers as subtypes of Epics and Features (using a list-based user-defined field).

In cases where an Epic is realized by a capability which in turn is realized by a feature, then one may set a dependency link between a capability feature to a business feature.

Regards,
Ofer

Thank you. We're also looking at adding a parent to the Epic. Doesn't feel "right" but at least we'll know how to do  that. We can see the Parent field, but can't see how to add options to the list other than "Backlog".

The Capability as Feature angle we'll explore today too.

@Mark Lawford It's been a while since you posted to this thread. Curious to learn what you've ended up setting up.

In the past when looking to go higher than an Epic I've looked to PPM to manage that Business Strategy level.
