Copying features/epics from one workspace to another in ALM Octane

Hi,

Our test team is new to using ALM Octane.

I have created some test features in a workspace, but we have now created a new workspace where we want to move the epics and features to. How do I go about doing this? there doesn't appear to be a copy and paste feature? We are used to using ALM QC which was a simple case of selecting the tests, right click copy, and paste into a new test suite in the other project?

Hi,

At the moment this capability of moving items between workspaces is not yet available, however we do have this capability in our backlog to be supported soon 🙂

One option that you can consider in the meantime is to use the REST API to copy entities from one workspace to the other.  We have a number of SDKs that can help with this process and is a pretty straightforward process

And another option which requires some formatting work is to export the features grid & than use "import backlog" in the new workspace. you will have to adapt the exported table with the exact format of the import utility. Internally, some team members used this process and moved features with 2 hours work.

Re: Copying features/epics from one workspace to another in ALM Octane

Hi Adi,

It is paramount to allow packaged exporting of all customizations (Rules, UDFs, Workflows and Forms) as well, otherwise you might need to do a lot of error-prone manual work before trying to import the content.

Are you planning to have this implemented?

   Thank You

Re: Copying features/epics from one workspace to another in ALM Octane

Hi,

Customization and workflow are in the scope of migration, rather than assets import (which assume the customization is aligned).

Feature , Tests, Defects migration is currently in progress. There's already early validations on Tests migration from ALM/QC to ALM Octane.

Workflow is more complex from few reasons :

1. some ALM/QC workflow are embedded features in ALM Octane

2. the data model of ALM Octane is not identical to the data model of ALM/QC - hence you can't replicate this rule, as the entities are different in their behaviour and purpose

3. in general, reading free code and auto convering it to logical UI based serverside business rules is a complex migration ask.

We can schedule a WebEx to understand your migration needs. send me a private message if you are interested.

Re: Copying features/epics from one workspace to another in ALM Octane

Hi Adi,

I am referring to pure ALM Octane -->ALM Octane export and import of customizations.

It is very common to apply customization in DEV/TEST environment, have the customer approval, and than than apply these in PROD environment. At the moment this is done 100% manually, and very error prone.

Got you.

Business rules - you can use export/import of the rules. for UDF's/Lists - you are right. no OOTB support yet. we will look into it
