ALM Workflow - Access records related to a new record

Has anyone tried to use workflow code to find which records are (will be) related to a "new" record, before it has been saved to the database (either the *_New or *_FieldChange subs)

Eg. When creating a defect during manual testing (from a step of a test run), workflow code should be able to identify which step it was created from, and trace that back to the test instance. In our situation, we have quite a few required fields, which could be prefilled with values from the test instance.

I can't think of any way of doing this directly - maybe this could be done indirectly in some cases - eg. keep track of when execution is started, and assume a defect created during execution is related to the test instance being executed, or use a toolbar button to create and prefill the defect.

One way of doing it: from the Run you can access the Test Instance, and from that you are able to save values for various fields to global variables which can be accessed when opening a new defect.
