Aegis ‘Depot’ Activity – HashGenerator

Aegis ‘Depot’ Activity – HashGenerator

The HashGenerator activity generates a Hash value for a given input string and selected Hash algorithm.

I've had this activity in my collection for some time and I find it great when the need arises.

If you don’t know what a Hash value is, the basic idea is to generate a (“unique”) identifier for a piece of data.  This hash value then has a number of uses including …

In databases, the hashed value can be used as an index in tables, allowing faster data lookups based on hash value than can be achieved using the original data.  This then allows Aegis both to query for and add data to tables which contains hash data (and isn't computed by SQL itself)

In Cryptography Hash functions are used for data integrity (checksums).  Since the hashed value doesn't actually contain the original value, you can’t 'decrypt' a hashed value, but you can verify data to ensure it hasn't been tampered by comparing to the original hash.  So for example you could store the hashed value of a config file in Global Property in Aegis.  In workflows you can read in the config file, hash its value and then verify the file hasn't been tampered with by comparing with the stored hash.

The activity provides MD5, SHA1, SHA256, SHA384, SHA512, RIPEMD160 algorithms and outputs the has both as HEX and base64 encoded.
