Gartner Names Micro Focus a Leader in 2017 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Software Test Automation

Micro Focus merged with Hewlett Packard Enterprise Software in September 2017. Prior to the transaction, Gartner had named HPE Software a leader for three consecutive years, dating back to 2014, in its Magic Quadrant for Software Test Automation. In the 2017 Magic Quadrant for Software Test Automation, Micro Focus is named a leader.

This is a pivotal year for Micro Focus as we merged two industry leading portfolios from HPE Software and Micro Focus. We believe Gartner’s positioning reflected our newly combined functional testing portfolio, which includes Unified Functional Testing (UFT), Business Process Testing (BPT), UFT Pro (LeanFT), and the Silk testing portfolio (Silk Test, Silk WebDriver and Silk Central). Picture1.png

Without a doubt, modern business demands require a different approach to application testing, and we believe Gartner shows awareness of our efforts and drives this point home.

“The dynamism and change we have seen over the last three years has been unprecedented,” says Shane Evans, Micro Focus’ Product Management Director responsible for Functional Testing.  “We expect this to accelerate as our customers dive deeper into Continuous Testing and support these efforts with BDD, codeless automation, and “bring your own” test assets to allow for greater flexibility.”

In addition to continuous testing, we feel that Gartner also recognized Micro Focus’ efforts across numerous other fronts.

Support for multiple personas and methodologies

We believe each user role should have access to the tool that results in the greatest productivity increase.

  • Test automation engineers have access to a purpose-built development environment that lets them create tests for the greatest range of technologies available.
  • Developer-testers can leverage twenty years of innovation in object recognition from within their IDE to quickly create high-quality test assets while working in the more technical environment they prefer.
  • Business testers can capture their own automation assets and re-combine existing ones to validate new and changed business processes while using tools specifically engineered to enhance their experience.

Scale functional testing to meet business demands

Just as we believe that each user should work with the tool that makes them their most productive, our newly-released StormRunner Functional product offers an on-demand solution designed for teams looking to optimize their functional testing for Web and Mobile applications. We believe StormRunner Functional adds to the functionality examined by Gartner’s Magic Quadrant by building on the three themes of:

  1. Building and maintaining a Digital Lab
  2. Right-sized test execution
  3. Maintaining current investment in automation

Furthermore, StormRunner Functional can be leveraged either natively in the cloud, or as a remote execution environment for Micro Focus Unified Functional Testing (UFT), Silk WebDriver, UFT Pro, or Selenium tests in a cloud environment.

With Silk WebDriver, Micro Focus delivers a free-to-use Selenium record, replay solution that leverages open source as a core element of the product and presents itself in a way that everybody could use it. Silk WebDriver makes open source consumable by business focused people who don’t want to go into technical details.

Enabling end-to-end DevOps

As the software industry’s largest testing tool provider, Micro Focus is in a unique position to partner with our customers to drive customer-centric innovation. One recent exhibit of this is ALM Octane.  The growing adoption of continuous testing practices spawned ALM Octane, which introduces the concept of the DevOps pipeline to the Agile and Quality domain. When combined, our customers have never-before realized visibility into the health of their projects. Aside from that, Micro Focus has introduced several key innovations between ALM Octane and functional testing:

  • Our products support both the most popular open source and commercial testing frameworks side-by-side.
  • Automatically trigger CI/CD test suite pipelines and analyze failures with real-time analytics in ALM Octane.
  • Integrate UFT, Silk Test or Selenium tests through Git and Jenkins instances and associate tests with ALM Octane entities to ensure quality coverage in release.
