Micro Focus proudly announces the general availability of Silk Central 20.5! If you already use Silk Central and you have a maintenance contract, you can upgrade to Silk Central 20.5 for free.
Silk Central is an innovative and open test-management solution that aids collaboration and control for all testing-related activities. Silk Central allows users to unify all assets of the testing life-cycle in a central location for planning, execution (manual & automated), and reporting, by integrating with various requirements management, test automation, defect tracking, and source control tools, giving users full traceability of their software quality at all stages.
Test Asset Workflow
Silk Central 20.5 introduces the test asset workflow concept, which allows you to map the processes in a corporate environment.A workflow defines which states and transitions can be performed on a manual test, which can be leveraged to ensure that only approved tests are selected for execution.
There are four defined out of the box states: Draft (initial state), Under Review, Approved and Obsolete. You can switch to another state using one of the five default transitions: Ready for review, Approve, Reject, Declare Obsolete and Reopen.
In the screenshot below you can see the workflow state of a manual test in the Details view:
The transition actions can be found in the context menu of the test. For example a test with the current Workflow Status Under Review can there be approved or rejected:
The Approval of a test is tied to the Silk Central version management. Once you approve a test, Silk Central automatically creates a new approved version. This means that you can always revert to the approved version, even if the test was modified afterwards. The full test details are shown in a dialog:
Attributes and Custom Properties
Mandatory Attributes and mandatory Custom Properties
Silk Central 20.5 introduces mandatory fields where Requirement Properties and Test Attributes can be defined as required. Requirements or Tests then cannot be created without setting those properties/attributes, driving teams to standardize approaches and the use of data.
Set an attribute as required:
On creating a new test it is mandatory to set a value for this attribute:
Same functionality for custom required properties. Set a custom property as required:
On creating a new requirement it is mandatory to set a value for this property:
The new attribute type Global List is introduced with Silk Central 20.5. The values of Global List attributes are backed by a list of values. Global Lists are maintained only once and can be used across projects. This reduces effort for management of data while it guarantees a common set of attribute values.
Create and maintain list of values centrally:
Define attributes for Tests and Execution Plans in your project:
Use the global list attributes like any other attribute type:
Lists of values can now be grouped. In Issue Manager, this can be used to define depending fields, where the available values of one list depend on the selection in the other list. Having only the valid subset of values available in a list reduces likelihood of wrong input as well as increases usability.
Model the dependent list of values:
After configured in Issue Manager different values are available for dependent list:
Silk Central 20.5 offers enhanced support for migrating from Quality Center to Silk Central. Among other improvements, attachments can now be moved automatically to Silk Central and images in descriptions are supported for tests, steps, requirements, and issues.
Furthermore it's possible to migrate
- tests from Unattached folder,
- type, reviewed status, cover status, target cycle and target release of Requirements,
- test creation date and
- attachments for folder.
The migration also supports now
- migrating QC9.2 databases and
- MSSql server instances
Silk Central 20.5 also appears in new colors. For the uniformly appearance of all Micro Focus products, we started to adjust the Silk Central UI according to the company standards.
Customer Driven Innovation
Silk Central now provides an indicator showing that a user has the Super User role in at least one group. The Super User role overrules all other assignments.
Self-registering execution server command line: The command line now also supports a parameter for timeout after which an email is sent to the administrator noting that the execution server is not responsive.
Execution plan runs API: The launch call now features an optional parameter that allows to start execution plans even if no matching execution server is available.
Source Control Labels: The run results now contain information about the source control label that was used during the execution of an automated test.
Document View Excel export: In the document view, you can now download the requirements as XLSX file. The generated Excel sheet contains all rows that are currently visible in the document view.
