EoL/EoS SmartConnector for Check Point OPSEC NG - 2018-04-28

Reading through the release notes for SmartConnector 7.7.0, it mentions that 32bit SmartConnectors support ending 2018-04-28 (page 5 - https://community.softwaregrp.com/t5/ArcSight-Connectors/SmartConnector-Release-Notes-7-7-0-7036/ta-p/1619034).

Support Ending 4/28/2018
Support ending for all 32-bit SmartConnectors – Use 64-bit SmartConnectors.

Subsequently, I raised a case with support whom confirmed that a 64bit CheckPoint OPSEC connector is not available.

Searching through the community posts, I didn't find anything specifically mentioning this SmartConnector was end of support.

Was there any one not aware of this?

Since the announcement was on the Release notes why to be also on the board? AFAIK there was never or very few and specific EOL announcements on the board.

Maybe nobody reads the Release Notes (which was from October) till the very end page....

Hi  alexandros_n,

The reason for putting it on the board was to raise awareness. The release notes do not specifically mention the this connector, only that 32-bit connectors are end of support.

As such, unless you recalled that the OPSEC connector is 32-bit and there wasn't a 64-bit version available it would be very easy to not realise it was end of support in April.

People who installing connectors for Checkpoint are well aware that this is a 32bit as:

a) you need to have the special 32bit binary file for installation

b) you can't install it on ArcMC.

c) you have lower limit of EPS due that you can't go more than 1,5GB (2 for Linux) of java heap size.

d) you had some interaction with the support known that you can't use it if you will go for R80.

All above means that Checkpoint connector is a "special" connector that you can't forget it and its requirements 🙂

Hello,

1) I would suggest to follow ArcSight Product Documentation:
https://community.softwaregrp.com/t5/ArcSight-Product-Documentation/ct-p/productdocs

2) From here you can access all the documentation and it is constantly updated.

3) Additionally I would suggest to read the Release notes as they come out (even if you are not upgrading at that moment) just to be aware what are the changes upfront as features are added/removed.

Regards,

Marijo
