How do i need to modify the ArcSight installation to work with Oracle ASM?

Can i modify the installation templates for the ArcSight DB component to work with Oracle ASM?

Will this invalidate our support agreement?

Before you go too far down this path, why not benchmark ASM vs EXT3 and see if the performance gain is worth the extra work?

Joe,

What tool do you use to benchmark disk I/O troughput?

I use IOStat as described in my benchmarking guide. IOmeter would probably be a good windows alternative.

I want some to actually test the I/O and not only measure.

Any ideas?

For performance testing try to use Quest Spotlight.

You can find how many IOPS you have - storage array are always conigured for some number of iops.

With spotlight you can find also which drive doesn't have enough IO.

ASM is recomended by Oracle.

On correctly configured storage ASM have much better performance then ext3 (even if partitioned as ArcSight recomends).

If you mean something that will put a load on your system, bleep would do that. You could also try oracle orion.

I want to do a stress  test on the drives. I want to read/write directly to it to see how much I/O it can cope with.

I am currently using a tool called bonnie++

Has anyone installed ArcSight ESM on Oracle 11gR2 Enterprise Edition (RAC) on an Exadata Database Machine?

Actually I'm intrested if ArcSight has an official response on this.

Re: How do i need to modify the ArcSight installation to work with Oracle ASM?

I'm testing now the installation of arcsight on Oracle ASM but had no success so far.

For a new installation the DB wizard is asking  for a SID connection instead of a SERVICE_NAME - cluster. If I enter only one node and go further with the installation you reach a point where you have to provide Data File Path - The directory where the data files for this tablespace will be created, and this is not possible in ASM.

The only thing I can think now is to migrate an already installed arcsight DB into ASM to see how it will work.

If someone has gone on this road before please share your experience.

Regards

Re: How do i need to modify the ArcSight installation to work with Oracle ASM?

You will have to install Oracle manually and then use the installer only to initiallise the db.

This should work but I am not sure if you are going to gain much in terms of performance.

Joe should be able to comment more on this.

Re: How do i need to modify the ArcSight installation to work with Oracle ASM?

Hi,

On exadata I already have installed the Oracle, and when I tried with the installer to initialize the db I was asked about a path were to store the data files and this is not possible in ASM.

I have imported our cards database in Oracle Exadata and one complex reports that nedeed 1,5 hour to run on the old server, now (without any tunning) it tooked 1,5 minute. So the performance is amazing.

Re: How do i need to modify the ArcSight installation to work with Oracle ASM?

Everything I've read suggests ASM is only marginally faster than using directIO (which is what filesystemio_options=setall does)

Is ASM required to use exadata?

Yes, ASM is required.

But can you please tell me what to configure on Manager to connect to a service name not to a SID in order to work with Oracle RAC?
