Trend is running every few minutes, but not writing data to the trend table

We have a trend which runs every few minutes , I think because to complete all the pending trend since 06 oct. 2009

but no data will be write to the trend table , newest entry in the table will be always 06 oct. 2009

error from log :

[2009-11-03 13:46:06,224][WARN ][default.com.arcsight.server.trends.TrendDBHelper][_setTrendInactive] Disabling trend /All Trends/Evonik/IPS/49 IPS Umbrella little Trend for KPI because: The trend has been set inactive because of too many query failures (>= 3)
[2009-11-03 13:46:11,021][ERROR][default.com.arcsight.server.trends.TrendTaskHandler][executeTask] Error for trend /All Trends/Evonik/IPS/49 IPS Umbrella little Trend for KPI
[2009-11-03 13:46:11,021][INFO ][default.com.arcsight.server.schedule.ScheduledTaskManager][generateInternalEvent] Scheduled task failed (49 IPS Umbrella little Trend for KPI). Encountered persistence problem while fetching data: Unable to execute query: ORA-01013: user requested cancel of current operations

any idea ?

How does the trend mechanism works ?

If trends will have the state "pending" , will these trends are complete ?

How does the system recognize that a trend is in the past ?

Re: Trend is running every few minutes, but not writing data to the trend table

The fact that the message states "user requested cancel of current operations" seems to indicate that the trend query took so long to run that it timed out (there is a default of the shorter of MIN(2 hours / 50% of the query interval)).  You could confirm this by looking in the trend status active channel, or running a report, that shows how long this trend ran for.  It will probably always show the same time (to within a few seconds) ... which would be the timeout time.

Once a trend has 3 errors in a row, it will disable itself, which is what the other message is saying.

I'm not sure why the trend would be "running every few minutes" in this case.  Are you sure it is?  "Pending" is what the ESM scheduler thinks of future jobs to run the trend query.  Once the trend disables itself, these *should* no longer show up as pending, as the job should have been canceled.  The trend keeps track of those it has already run (the scheduler will not).

Re: Trend is running every few minutes, but not writing data to the trend table

David:

Are there any known system/usability consequences to changing the default trend timeouts (e.g., percentage to 75%) in server.properites?  I have a high-traffic system that requires around 20 minutes for a normal one-hour trend to complete and it's timing out occasionally.

Re: Trend is running every few minutes, but not writing data to the trend table

The only real consequence is that you have have a lot of the system resources tied up running this query.  Otherwise 75% is OK.  It just means that for every 1 hour query, it may take 45 minutes.  If this is an infrequent occurrence or you're "prepared" for this impact on the system, then it should be fine.  While it runs this query, it will tie up a scheduler "slot", but there are others that are available.  Also, if it falls behind for some reason, the impact of catching up will be a bit more.  Mostly the standard warnings; nothing out of the ordinary or unexpected.
