Discover Oracle instance without referring tnsnames.ora

Hi,

Is there an alternate way to discover oracle instances without reading tnsnames.ora file. ? I run discovery using host applications by shell or DB connections by shell.. All jobs read the oracle instances from tnsnames.ora file. The ora file entries are invlaid in most of the server and hence the discovery reports wrong instance count. How to discover oracle instance without reading tnsnames file?

Regards,

James
