How can I limit the discovery of windows services?

Jump to solution

Hello all, our Inv. Discovery by Scanner job is bringing in roughly 20,000,000 Windows services and respective relationships.  We'd like to limit this based on service name or service operational state.  Can this be done?

Hi Mike,

I don't think there is such feature in the scanner. However you  can use the global filtering capabilities on the probe. The documentation is here

It may be a lot of work to create an exclude list with all the services you don't want to create CIs on. If the services you want are few, you can use an include list instead.

Hi,

which CI type the data is placed exactly to? I don't see the Inventory Discovery to be able to bring Windows Services. Maybe you are talking about process cis?

Hi Petko, Windows services is it's own CI Type.  When we run it against our nodes it brings in some valuable information... and some not so valuable services which we would like to exclude such as:

Adaptive Brightness (Adaptive brightness is a simple feature that adjusts your screen brightness according to the light around you)

CD/DVD File System Reader (The CD/DVD File System Reader service is a file system driver)

Fax (The Microsoft-Windows-Fax-Service component specifies settings for faxes, including how they are sent, received, viewed, and printed)

Floppy Disk Controller Driver (The Floppy Disk Controller Driver service is a kernel mode driver)

We were hoping to limit service discovery in some way to filter out services we dont care about.  We've since turned off the option to collect service information (see attachment).  Also, when service discovery is enabled, the history tables grow to the point that CMDB functionality is compromised and history rolls over every day.

You can filter those CIs with GlobalFiltering or restrict them from the scanner template (Windows services and Unix darestrict_services_scanner.PNGemons).
