Rediscovering just one IP or a group of IPs and not an entire IP range

Running UCMDB 10.22CUP6 on Windows.

We have large IP ranges (e.g., netmask=24 or netmask=20).  At times we need to run a rediscovery on just a couple of IPs.  The only way we have done that is to redo the range to separate out the IPs we want to rediscover and then create a zone with just those IPs.  Is there a better and easier way to specify for UCMDB to just rediscover specific IPs?  Mostly, we need to just run the Host Connection by SNMP against the desired nodes.

Thanks,
Mel

Re: Rediscovering just one IP or a group of IPs and not an entire IP range

Hi Mel,

netmask 20 signifies you have upto 4094 active nodes in the network. This is far from big and is ping sweeped for minute or two.

Then you have the Host Connection by SNMP which takes also not long time to complete. One way to go if you find the operations slow is to increase the threads being executed on the probes.

The danger of scanning just a subset of the ranges, is that you may end up with partial results and miss some important nodes. But if you really want to do that, you can specify zone specific ranges when defining the zone for SNMP:

Re: Rediscovering just one IP or a group of IPs and not an entire IP range

Petko,

A whole range takes a non-significant amount of time.  It also has the probe hitting IPs unnecessarily with SNMP requests.  Breaking up a zone into smaller pieces for testing is very painful.

There really should be a functionality to just rediscover a single IP.

Thanks,
Mel

Re: Rediscovering just one IP or a group of IPs and not an entire IP range

Hi,

I can't understand why breaking up the zone into smaller pieces is that painful. I see at least two ways to accomplish what you want:

1. To specify test zone with subset of the IPs, as per the screenshot above.

2. Dont use Zones, but discovery jobs directly, where you can duplicate the Out of the Box SNMP discovery job and change the trigger TQL to use only the IP addresses you specify.

Cheers,
