agent based discovery urgent

we have agentless discovery from a different vendor. our customer wants to use agent based Universal Discovery and leverage business application modeling and relationships and they want this modeled and pushed into itsm  tool -ServiceDesk cmdb. Is universal discovery alone sufficient in this case? or do we need ucmdb and adapters for pushing data also ? how long does it take to implement agent based universal discovery? experts any ideas on duration timefram?

Re: agent based discovery urgent

UCMDB is required to utilize UD, integrations may indeed be done through UCMDB.

Additional UCMDB is required to utilize UD and integrations.

Are you sure it's Service Desk you want to replicate to?

UCMDB should be suffecient out of the box to supply your needs for ITSM activity.

Deployment time depends on scope and network topology.

You could have a representative data set within 30 days.

I am curious as to why you customer wants Agent-based discovery. Unless they are discovering devices not always connected to the network, have credential issues or require usage data Agent-less is (IMHO) a more productive choice.

Re: agent based discovery urgent

they want deep level discovery and UD 10.20 seems to have both agentless and agent based (ddmi , ddma) together , but does this follow a similar licensing like ucmdb 10.10 ?

Re: agent based discovery urgent

Yes licensing follows UCMDB 10.10 closely. Foundation, Integration, UDI and UD I beleive.

Beginning with v10.10 you get similar depth of discovery whether agent-less or agent-based.

As I stated the only additional information captured is usage.

UD does not follow the ddmi model.

Re: agent based discovery urgent

can  UD 10.20 discover Virtual IPs , load balancers , switches and other linux servers without deploying agents on the network ?  How secure is the communication with the agents , can there be certain firewall rules where discovery will not function or any transaction processing networks?

for licensing , in 10.20 is it based on total number agents deployed and ucmdb integration studio poiints?

Re: agent based discovery urgent

To answer one of your questions about agentless discovery, here's some stats from our environment:  17 load balancers, 408 switches, 238 routers, and 110 Linux servers, all discovered agentlessly, and without integration with any other system.  We have uCMDB and UD 10.20 CUP 1, CP 15 Update 1.  Latest and greatest.

Re: agent based discovery urgent

is  hp cms - UD -ucmdb 10.20  better discovery product with network device , storage and database discovery mechanisms than BMC atrium , ServiceNow discovery and Assetgen  s?  Also is there a demo or documenation on Service Dashboard feature in 10.20? thanks experts.

Re: agent based discovery urgent

UD 10.20 is for sure the best discovery product compared to other players. The product has extensive Discovery capabilities. IF you know the history, HP merged 2 power products ( DDMA & DDMi ) in to one product. This gives flexibility to HP customers to leverage discovery capabilities & extensive software discovery. With 10.20, the product also is offering Automated service modelling which is a standing out feature in the CMS portfolio where you can discover an application by giving just an URL of an application. Promising features and good customer forums to get ideas and best practices to personalize the product.

Re: agent based discovery urgent

thanks experts. But there is no information on service dashboard. For automated service modeling , if the business application does not have  a application url , does the  automated modeling still work ? or do we need to go by the usual manual modeling in modeling studio on ucmdb ui?

Re: agent based discovery urgent

There are 3 ways to get service modelling configured.

- Instance based model ( where customers can drag / drop CIs to service models)
- Patter based model ( where customers can give a signature like add all the servers with running exchange service to Exchange service model)
- ASM ( This is a new feature available from 10.20 where it does the top down discovery)

A hybrid approach to get the best service model is always advise
