agentbased and agentless discovery on same remote servers

Hi,

Customer want to have deep inventory details, dependency and relationship  and at the same time want to have software related data for software management for SAM module in AM.

So  decided to have agentbased and agentless discovery on the same  remote servers.

Please suggest how to proceed further for this approach and what are the risk  factors and precaution need toconsider.

Can we have same database instance to store agentbased and agentless discovery or there could be any reconcilation issue.???

with regards,

Nick

Re: agentbased and agentless discovery on same remote servers

Hi Nick,

Scanner-based Inventory as well as Application Dependency Mapping can be both executed through either agent-based protocols such as UDA or agentless protocols such as NTCMD or SSH.

When configuring both Scanner-based Inventory and deep discovery via Host Resources and Applications jobs, please make sure that you avoid the discovery of the same CI types such as Installed software, Windows Services, etc. Let scanner-based inventory detect that and use Host Resource and Applications to report Running software. Then it should not cause the same CIs to be reported multiple times and avoid dangers of having duplicates.

Irina

Re: agentbased and agentless discovery on same remote servers

Hi,

Regarding agentbased and agentless discovery there are few doubts. Please help me to understand the same.

1.  I HAVE ALREADY DONE DISCOVERY WITH AGENTLESS SSH RPOTOCOLS FOR UNIX SYSTEM AND WE HAVE DECIDED TO DO DISCOVERY AGAIN WITH SCANNER. sO IN THIS CASE INSTALLED APPLICATIONS MAY GET DUPLICATE SO CAN WE DELETE INSTALLED SOFTWWARE FROM UCMDB AND REDISCIVER THE NODES WITH SCANNER AND SAVE IT IN THE SAME DATABASE???

2.  I OBSERVED INSTALLED SOFTWARE LIST FROM AGENTLESS DISCOVERY IS  VERY BIG THAN AGENTBASED DISCVERY. I.E. 130 FROM AGENTLESS AND 20 INSTALLED SOFT. FROM AGENTBASED DISCOVERY. wHY IT IS SO???

3. aGENTLESS DISCOVERY DOES DISCOVER "INSTALLED SOFTWARE" AND "RUNNING SOFTWARE" BUT AGENTBASED DISCOVERY DISCOVERS ONLY INSTALLED SOFTWARE??? I RAN SCANNER ON ucmdb SERVER BUT UCMDB APPLICATION WAS NOT DETECTED BY SCANNER BASED DISCOVERY . WANT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT COULD BE THE REASON??

3. IN CASE OF  MANUAL AGENT INSTALATION, WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES IN FUTURE??OR  WHAT ARE THE FACTORS NEED TO CONSIDER ???

EXPECTING DETAIL INFORMATIONS ON ABOVE QUERIES.

WITH REGARDS,

NICK

Re: agentbased and agentless discovery on same remote servers

Hi Nick,

Please see my comments below:

1. If you use Inventory Discovery by Scanner jobs now, it is configured to fully replace Installed Software. So whatever was done with Host Resources by Application, would be replaced by this job, so it is not necessary to do anything.

2. Host Resources and Applications job retrieves raw installed information, which means that for every package on UNIX it will create Install Software CI. Scanner-based Inventory by default only reports normalised software as detected through Software Application Library. It is possible for Scanner-based Inventory to also report raw installed software (the same as Host Resources and Applications job is doing), but by default it is not configured as it may result in duplicate Installed Software to be reported.

3. Detection of the Running Software is part of the UD Full functionality and it is not licensed under Inventory license. For this reason Scanner-based Inventory does not report Running software.

4. Please note, that if manual agent installation is done so that the agent is configured under a non-root user account, it would not be possible to use it to run inventory using sudo capability with elevated privileges. When the agent is installed automatically, a special reference is created between the UD agent and the SSH credential of the sudo user that was used for the installation, and that enables the sudo operations through the agent that is run under a non-root account.  If the agent is installed under the root user, then there is no difference.

Irina

Re: agentbased and agentless discovery on same remote servers

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

But I want to knnow how the software utilization in percentage get calculated. When I ran the scanner , software utilization  was 0 .

if application is installed  5 months before then UD shows the utilization from the day the app is installed or from the day when scanner scan the data.

expectinng answer in detail.

with regards,

Nick

Re: agentbased and agentless discovery on same remote servers

Hi Nick,

UD Agent includes a plug-in that allows collection of the software utilization data. Software Utilization plug-in monitors the running processes on the discovery node and saves the results in a separate XML file for each day. There is also a summarized version named discusg.cxu which contains the aggregated utilization information.
The scanner collects a copy of the discusg.cxu file and stores its content in the scan file in a special stored file called Software Utilization Data. The XML Enricher then extracts and processes the Software
Utilization data.

So, the answer to your question depends on when Software Utilization plug-in was enabled. If it was enabled recently, then you will not see the data for the previous 5 months.

Irina
