data flow probes running slow

Running 10.32 on the mgmt server and probes.  The probes seem to be running slow,  The dal.slow log ahs alot of entries...

Was wondering what could be causing this?  What other logs should I look at and what should i be looking for to troiubleshoot??

Re: data flow probes running slow

Hi,

if you have dal.slow log entries, this means the database you are using is not responding fast to the queries issued from UCMDB. If you use local postgresql database, consider upgrading the specs of the server or putting it on external server. If you use external databases (oracle, mssql or postgresql) consider involving a db specialist to help you optimize them.

Re: data flow probes running slow

Hello Terrence,

There could be various reasons why the discoveries seem to run slow. It could be an issue with writing to the DB as Petko suggested, it could be an issue at the application server due to slow processing of results (reconcilication), it could be a results queue issue at the probe, or an actual slow discovery by the probe, etc.

To start with, I would check "Total Discovered CIs in sending queue" under Data Flow Probe Status to see if there is a queue and what its size is. Do you constantly see a number greater than 0?

Also how many IPs are reported under the probe in Data Flow Probe Setup?

You can also check the following in the probe's JMX, which can tell you more about the discoveries:

GwTaskResultDistributer
ManagerPerformance (generateStatisticsData)
JobsInformation (viewJobsStatuses)

Take a look at the probe's startup.log as well, to see if the probe restarts often (it does that automatically to clean stuck discovery threads).

There are is a lot of tuning related to discovery that you can do to both the application server and the probe, but it all depends on what the exact problem is and how powerful the systems are. Have you checked the system performance on both (CPU, memory)?

Most discovery parameters configuration is in the probe's DataFlowProbe.properties file, but do not change any values there if you do not really understand what they are doing as even one change could have serious impact to the discovery performance (it is a good idea to consult with Support as well).

Hope these general tips will help you get started.

Re: data flow probes running slow

Another good idea for Database slowness (server side... which is where the dal logs are at):

  1. Oracle... make SURE you have followed the db install guide for the Oracle Parameters.  That makes an enormous difference
  2. MSSQL Server... make sure you are reindexing daily
Hope this helps,
