CI type of virtual network device

0 Votes

Hello, we have some virtual network device in our environment, sepcifically some VirtualWanAccelerator.

Since they are virtual, they are discovered by the VmWare discovery as Unix CI but since they have an SNMP agent, the SNMP discovery sees them as a netdevice.

Each time these discovery job runs, it deletes all the attributes and relations to the CI and recreates them all, based on the result of that specific job.

Even the CreatedBy and the CreatedTime attributes are updated as if that was a new CI discovery.

Our understanding is that this is the expected behaviour of the discovery jobs, because they see the CI as a different type.

We think that, with more and more specialized virtual devices, that the VmWare discovery should includes some logic to deal with those conditions and avoid these unecessary back and forth between CI types.

Regards,

Benoit

There is a possibility this is just a defect .  I’ve moved the idea into Waiting for Votes, but I’d like to get a bit more info from you and perhaps we can deal with this more expeditiously.

You mention you are capturing a network device via VMware, and then you’re also capturing the same device using SNMP discovery.

Would you send me some details please – ideally, I’d like to see a picture of the CI type that is being discovered by VMware, and then the CI type discovered by SNMP.  Also, if possible, include the communication logs that were generated using both discovery jobs, with the comm log configured to include results discovery results.  I’ll have my R&D take a look and give me a determination.
