Multiple Proble Configuration for Connectivity via Smart Agent

Multiple Proble Configuration for Connectivity via Smart Agent

Smart Agent is one of the good feature that has been included recently but need some improvements. Smart Agent come very effective in the discovery of the Workstation. Specially, when the users' are on the move.

Requirement: If the Agent is not able to communicate via Smart Agent configured in the registry key "SCHEDULER_ProbeBaseURL" then it should communicate with another proble.

I don't see in the document, for configuring the secondary probe for Smart Agent.

There should be a provision to at least configure a Primary & Secondary probe for the Smart Agent

NOTE: Not looking for a load balancer here because many organisation want cost effective solution but having the need for a external load balancer.

Some points on this:

  • Smart agent calling home two probes – we explicitly wanted to make the ADID feature “sticky”, so that it remembers its “home” probe. This is done to ensure that the same probe cache is used in all cases. With this we tried to solve the current problem with the auto-delete process, which does not work correctly when the inventory data from the same device hits different probes (and as the result different probe cache)

Currently one can have a load-balancer in front of probes and configure all agents to contact it. some customers prefer to have dedicated call home probes, so that they process the call home requests quicker and have a couple load balanced by a load balancer… This cannot work with ADID, so we will look for ways to resolve it.

LB is definitely a good option but due the organizational policies, adding load-balancer in front of the probe available in multiple location (cities / countries) becomes a challenge. Another way to address could be using the call-home feature. The probe which responds the quickest can be used by the Smart Agent to communicate - of cause one need to evaluate the pros & cons before implementing the feature.
