VMware discovery of Datastore Clusters

VMware discovery of Datastore Clusters

Hi all,

VMware Datastore Clusters are entities containing one or multiple datastores. They are very important as clients are using them in build and provisioning processes together with other ITIL processes.

If we want to be competitive on te market we need to introduce this new CIT with dependencies similar to those of VMware Datastore with additional relationship to VMware Datastore.

Some of possible Data Store attributes: used/free/total space, number of datastores, datastore largest free space, number of VMs, storage DRS automation

Enterprise environments expects everything will be redundant including VMWare Storage so they configure VMWare Datastore Clusters. I can't imagine claiming VMWare discovery is supported without Datastore Clusters support.

This is a really good idea and it's something we're seriously considering.  We've received an idea that is of the same type of information though, and are working with that team to review their requirements.  Take a look at the ER and let me know if what they wrote would not resolve your requirements?

Hi Bill,

it is great and close, also needed but this is separate idea,
VMware Datastore Cluster contains multiple datastores. This is not covered via this previous idea.

Datastore Clusters are needed as all the provisioning process is going over those.

I agree with @Bozidar@Bill_Dyck  this isn't a duplicate of the previous idea.

VMWare supports redundancy at the datastore level so without datastore clusters support we can't connect VMs to datastores because there isn't 1:1 relationship. VMWare admins are telling us they never deploy VMs directly to datastores because there is no redundancy.

The issue with the https://community.microfocus.com/t5/CMS-Idea-Exchange/Population-of-VMware-storage-topology-mapping-between-Drive-C-gt/idi-p/2685309 idea is a wrong assumption. VMWare setups in enterprise environments include Datastore Clusters so the model isn't correct:

It should be:
Windows -> Windows disk device -> VMDK -> VMWare Datastore Cluster -> VMWare Datastore

VMware Datastore Clusters

However usage of the current VMWare Discovery implementation is limited only to small environments. Large systems expect redundancy on all levels and they invest a lot of money to achive it. So VMWare Datastore Clusters support is mandatory.
