Document Factory Troubleshooting Tip (invalid HTML)

Resolution:

If you are troubleshooting a Document Factory issue and have already confirmed that the DocFactory.exe version you are using is compatible with both the Caliber Server you are connecting to and the MS Word version you are invoking, this tip may apply to you.

Several issues in Document Factory can be traced to the conversion between the underlying HTML data (Caliber 6.0 and later) and Microsoft Word"s DOC file format. The complex, and occasionally invalid, HTML created by pasting data copied from sources such as Word, PDF Files, and web pages can cause issues with both the formatting and actual content of Document Factory reports.

Typically the problem in your DocFactory report will point to the problem data, as the formatting or content problem will occur at a specific point no matter when the report is run or by whom. You may also be able to see error messages in the DocFactory log file generated.

In cases such as this, try copying the contents of the problem Requirement"s description field to a text-only editor such as Notepad. Next, select the entire contents of the field and delete them, then paste the plain-text version back in and save your changes in the Caliber Client. Re-run your report to determine whether this change successfully resolved your issue.

The formatting toolbar in the Caliber Client produces fairly uncomplicated HTML, so re-styling the description data within Caliber should not cause further problems.

Please note that this tip will not apply to every situation. If your issues continue, please contact Borland Technical Support.
