SQL error when starting OptimalTrace Server

This article addresses the error Unable to connect to SQLServer database, the TCP/IP connection to the host has failed.

Problem:

When attempting to start the OptimalTrace Server, we receive the error:

Unable to connect to SQLServer database.

Please ensure that the database settings are correct.

The TCP/IP connection to the host has failed.

java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect

How do we resolve this issue?

Resolution:

With the SQL 2005 installation, the protocol TCP/IP is disabled by default. To resolve this issue:


  1. Go into SQL Server Configuration Manager.
  2. Expand SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration.
  3. Select Protocols for MSSQLSERVER.
  4. Select TCP/IP.
  5. Right click on the protocol and select to Enable.
  6. Select Named Pipes.
  7. Right click on the protocol and select to Enable.
  8. Restart SQL Server (MSSQL) service.
