VSTS: ?SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.?

Resolution:

Version: Build 8.1.488 of CaliberRM for Team Foundation Server.

This error message may result when you try to expand the Requirements node in Team Explorer. The reason this exception may be occurring is due to a defect in our installer that affects customers who have installed TFS using a Dual-Server deployment.

When SQL Server has not been installed on the same machine as TFS, a configuration setting is written to the web.config file for our web service that specifies the name of the Database Server. The problem is that there is a static entry for the setting already in the web.config file that specifies the Database Server to be (local). The two settings are conflicting and the end result is that our web service throws an exception when it tries to open a connection to SQL Server.

To resolve this issue, please go to the directory on the TFS machine where you have installed CaliberRM for Team Foundation Server. The contents of this directory will include the web.config file for our web service. Open the file with notepad, and you should see two application settings for the key ?Database Server? as shown below.

?

Please remove the add element with the value of (local) such that the file now has only one key for the Database Server.

?

Please save the changes to your web.config file. Close Visual Studio and re-open it again. You should now be able to expand the Requirements node in Team Explorer.
