Why do I receive the error "Word encountered an error processing *.xml unspecified error...Line: X, Column : Y?

Problem:

Why do I receive the error "Word encountered an error processing *.xml unspecified error...Line: X, Column : Y?

Resolution:

Symptom:

When attempting to run DocFactory 2, aka DocFactory 2008, an error is received in a general format like "Word encountered an error processing *.xml unspecified error...Line: X, Column : Y" . Running traditional DocFactory using the same template does not result in the error.

Unspecified Error

Details:

This symptom may be caused by the presence of a Bookmark in the source template (*.dot) that has a start or end in the middle of a DocFactory Keyword or command. Another possible related cause is a Bookmark that is unbalanced, for example one Word.bookmark.start with two Word.bookmark.end tags, or vice versa. Typically unbalanced bookmarks are uncommon and are usually the result of a copy/paste operation in between bookmark tags in an original source, or an error as the result of a conversion of some type.

To confirm the presence of bookmarks:
Select a template and then Right-Click-->Open. Once the template is open in Word, choose Tools-->Options and then select the View Tab. Under the section for Show, check the Bookmarks option, and then select Always from the drop down box. The Bookmark formatting marks will look like brackets [] though are slightly larger in size and will appear faintly grey instead of black font.

There is a sample template attached that includes bookmarks and you may use to confirm settings prior to checking the template in question. The bookmarks in the attached example template are only visible once Word has been configured to show formatting marks.

Solution:

For any template in which bookmarks are not needed, all bookmarks may be removed for a simplistic fix.

If bookmarks are used for Table of Contents or other purposes, then it will be a little more tedious to match up bookmarks to confirm the starts and ends are balanced and to ensure that a bookmark formatting character does not appear within a keyword or command.
