Agent problems, including BSOD during uninstall

I have a test setup with ZCM using VMWare Server. I had the system running
at one point, but now my server has no record of the XP Pro client I had
setup. The ZCM agent on the client still claims to be registered with the
server and I've confirmed that DNS resolution still works.

I've tried to re-deploy to the client, but it stops with the message that
the agent is already running on the system. Then I tried to uninstall the
adaptive agent (so I could re-deploy), but I get the BSOD with a fatal error
and the system reboots.

Any suggestions?

Re: Agent problems, including BSOD during uninstall

Dan,

zac is your friend - you can run it on the workstation to do an
unregister...

Re: Agent problems, including BSOD during uninstall

I ran "zac unr" which returned the following:

Processing Command: unr

username: administrator
password: ****

Unable to unregister the device with the server.

RegisterUser - Unable to register with any service

I can ping the server, name resolution is working, and both client and
server have the windows firewall turned off.

Dan,

what do you see in the log file?

Re: Agent problems, including BSOD during uninstall

Okay, I did get it unregistered from the server, but It still gives me the
BSOD and reboots if I try to uninstall the agent. This is very disconcerting
- if I run ZCM10 on our live systems, I'd hate to be caught in a situation
where I can't uninstall the agent if needed.

Re: Agent problems, including BSOD during uninstall

Dan,

understood - we need to see if it's just that one machine (in which
case it could be something that was already broken) or if it's common
to more than one. What's the BSOD error?

Re: Agent problems, including BSOD during uninstall

The exact BSOD text...

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows SubSystem system process terminated unexpectedly with a status
of 0xc0000005 (0x7c9106c3 0x0052ed04).
The system has been shut down.

To recap, this happens every time I try to uninstall the adaptive agent.
When I click the final "next" in the uninstall prompts, it moves to the
uninstall progress dialogue, which get's about 3-4 bars along before this
BSOD hits and the system restarts.

This is a clean XP machine running under VMWare server that was setup solely
for testing ZPM vs. ZCM. I had the ZPM 7 agent installed previously and had
used that to install Quicktime, Java and Firefox. Then removed ZPM agent and
installed the ZCM 10 adaptive agent. That's about all as far as I recall
(this spanned several weeks due to other demands on my time).

Re: Agent problems, including BSOD during uninstall

Dan,

OK, is this the beta build, or the one from download.novell.com ?

Re: Agent problems, including BSOD during uninstall

Everything reports version 10.0.0.0 - I couldn't find any other specific
build numbers.

If you have the CD that was used to install the server, could you post the
MD5SUM of that CD?

Would you have another fresh install of XP to test with? One that did not
already have the ZDM agent installed.

Re: Agent problems, including BSOD during uninstall

The MD5 of the ISO I'm using is...acd0a9f9156db81cc4bc91cb33b8bdad

I'm working on setting up a clean XP Pro VM to work with. I'll let you know
how that goes.

Ok, that looks fine.

Let us know if you have the same results with the second test.
