Icons not always appearing with Credential Provider disabled

Hi there

Running agent 11.2.3.21755 on Windows 7, we are using a third-party credential provider and have disabled the ZEN one with the registry value documented in ZENworks 11 SP2 User Source and Authentication Reference. Primarily, this is to prevent the multiple tiles on the login screen and enable SSO with the third-party tool.

ZEN-delivered Desktop icons, both device and user assigned don't always appear despite their bundles showing as available and effective. Refreshes make no difference.

Note that I've found this behaviour to be sporadic; after numerous reboots and logins/outs, I've found that it's roughly every other login that the ZEN icons will appear. Having said that, it sometimes surprises me by having them show up!

Re: Icons not always appearing with Credential Provider disabled

Please assign some Icons to the NAL WINDOW for both the User and Device.
Then when the icons are "missing", please check to see if they are in NAL.

There seems to be an issue where sometimes Windows does not properly
return the Folder Locations for Desktop/Startmenu, which causes the
icons to not be created there, but NAL would not be impacted.

Also are you redirecting any folders?

Re: Icons not always appearing with Credential Provider disa

Hi Craig

Thanks for your reply.

We had so far hidden the "ZENworks Adaptive Agent" icon and forcing it to appear with HKLM\Software\Novell\ZCM\NAL SetIconOnDesktop=DWORD:0000001 brought the icons back but with an on average 90 second delay after standard Windows icons appeared. Found this key via https://forums.novell.com/novell-product-discussions/endpoint-management/zenworks/configuration-management/zcm-11/zcm11-agent-deployment-windows/463081-no-desktop-icons-11-2-2-m-2-a-post2251705.html#post2251705.

Set the above key to 0, gave it a couple of reboots to induce the issue again and nothing appeared on Desktop or in Computer\ZENworks Adaptive Agent. Again, bundles were in the Agent properties and we set all bundles to appear in the Application Window anyway.

No folder redirection going on here.

Re: Icons not always appearing with Credential Provider disabled

If they are appearing in the NAL Window, then it's a known issue they
are working on fixing. Most people do not see it and I'm not sure why
some do, but the root cause comes back to a Windows API not reliably
giving proper results. They are testing various fixes for when the API
fails, but do not have an FTF yet.

Re: Icons not always appearing with Credential Provider disa

Hi Craig

You may not have read my last post fully. With no .nal icons appearing and ZENworks Adaptive Agent Desktop icon disabled, nothing appeared in the ZENworks Adaptive Agent window. However, you're lucky if every other reboot icons appear.

With the ZENworks Adaptive Agent Desktop icon enabled, .nal icons appear after a ~90 second wait.

Re: Icons not always appearing with Credential Provider disabled

OK, I would not know why the icons are not appearing in the NAL Window.
There are not any known issues regarding that and the reg key should not
have any impact upon the Window.

You may want an SR.
