Primary server with Internal and External IP Addresses

We're running zcm2017 sp3 with 2 primary servers, both servers had IP address for the internal network and public ip address to service laptops.

We're seeing our laptops trying to talk from the internal network to the public ip address of the zenworks server, is there a way to prevent or control the behaviour?

Thanks

Re: Primary server with Internal and External IP Addresses

#1 - Location Rules device Servers (Not Addresses).  Thus a device will receive all of a Servers Advertised Addresses.

#2 - By Default all of a server's addresses are advertised, but if you go to the server object in the ZCC, select settings, and then infrastructure management you can prevent one or more addresses from being advertised for managed devices to use.

#3 - Devices will try and "Ping" the ZENworks  services on each addresses advertised by a server.  Normally only one would be valid and the other will be marked "Bad" by the agent after an initial ping attempt.  These tests are done in parallel so that there is not a delay while the "Bad" request times out.

There is not any way per se to prevent the internal devices from doing an intermittent "ping" the second address so long as it is advertised but presuming the other address is inaccessible it should not be a matter of concern since it will not keep attempting to use it.  The only way to completely prevent it would be to have Primaries that were dedicated to Internal or External Resources and only advertised an Internal or External Address.  They could have both internal and external addresses, but one of them would need to be flagged to not advertise.

Re: Primary server with Internal and External IP Addresses

Hi Craig,

Thanks for that, I had misunderstood in thinking that the client only knew the DNS name for the servers, so had it resolving to different addresses if internal or external, hence why I was confused about the behaviour.

Thanks

Re: Primary server with Internal and External IP Addresses

"zac zc -l" will list all of the addresses the agent uses.  (That is a lower case "L" FYI)

Note: Attempting to restrict All IP Addresses in the ZCC will not just leave the DNS Entries.  Just tested.  But having both is important anyway.  Let's say a device goes from internal to extrernal, but DNS cache still has the other IP address...it will fall back to IP and keep working.  Also if a Server's IP or DNS changes, the agent will keep on trucking until the agent can contact the server and get everything lined up again.
