Printers policy

I'm back with a previous post about printer policy. Many questions about
that point:

1. How can we add printer drivers to be able to select the printer model in
the browse windows ?
2. Where printer drivers are store locally on the ZCM server ?
3. If a user is member of local users group, does the printer suppose to be
installed anyway ?
4. Is it possible to hide the printer installation box that appear when
printer refresh on a computer, or hide Cancel button on that box ?
5. On many workstations, when a printer policy is associated with computers,
error "Exception thrown during policy operation"
"POLICYHANDLERS.PrinterPolicy.ExceptionThrown" "The policy POLICYNAME could
not be applied successfully" appear in the result log on the ZCM server and
those computers appear in the Devices Failed section. In the computer local
log file, Fail to connect to IPC port.

Re: Printers policy

Think my questions surpass forum support knowledge.
Hope someone can answer me soon...

Re: Printers policy

Nh,

I think we can help:
1. The current implementation of the printer policy does not support adding drivers to the driver list via the user interface. Currently we read a configuration file "...\Novell\ZENworks\share\tomcat\webapps\zenworks\WEB-INF\conf\printerDriverDetails.conf" for the list of drivers. One can manually add an entry in the format "Driver name = Driver description" and insert this entry alphabetically. However, the driver content is not stored in the server but the path to the driver file (content) is provided by the administrator. (as in Step 4 of the local printer configuration screen)

2. There is no defined path for the driver files. This is provided at the printer policy configuration-time by the administrator. (as in Step 4 of the local printer configuration screen)

3. A printer installation policy can be configured and associated to a ZENworks user, a managed device or a ZENworks user-group. We do not support associations with a windows local user-group.

4. Could you give an example of this?

5. I'll need the zmd-messages.log for this machine, after yo've set logging level to debug and then applied the policy. You can send it to spond at novell dot com if you'd be so kind...

Re: Printers policy

Hi Shaun,
1. I will test this. For the drivers files, is it preferable to zip those
fiiles to "nipp.zip" then copy those files on a share on the ZCM server ?
Actually, drivers files are in nipp.zip format but stored on the print
server.
3. Printer policies are associated with managed devices.
4. I think that installation box came from Windows. On a Windows shared
printer, if you right click on a printer and select connect, that's the
screen that appear and from which user can click Cancel.
5. Printers are installing but I'm not sure printer drivers are force to be
installed even if I specified it in my policy. I will send you that log
file...

Re: Printers policy

Nh,

for the driver, it gets uploaded to the content-repo, so you don't need
to put it on a share...

Re: Printers policy

When I try to put a printer as default with my printer policy, error message
"POLICYHANDLERS.PrinterPolicy.SetDefaultSettingsNotSupported" is mentionned
in the ZCM server console messages log.

Re: Printers policy

No. it's ZCM 10.0.0. I can't update to 10.0.1 (see posts in server-install
forum.

Re: Printers policy

Nh,

then there's not much I can do to help - you'd need those fixes in
place before it's worth looking at, to be honest...

Re: Printers policy

and how can I get those fixes without being able to update my ZCM server ?
Update is supposed to be downloaded to my server but there is not
system-update directory on my server...
Is there any other way to install those updates manually ?

Re: Printers policy

Nh,

not at the moment: the system update problems are being worked on, that
I can promise you...

Re: Printers policy

I also notice that if a user log on a computer, a printyer is installed (but
not set as default 😞 ). If he logs on another computer, previous printer
is installed but that printer is not in associated to that computer. Why ?
Users have roaming profiles but I don't want to force printers not specified
in the policy to be uninstalled because I have local printers that can be
used like file printers.
Thanks for your support.
