Random BSOD and freezes after Agent Installatiation

Hello,

after restoring an sysprep Image with ZCM11 i get random bsod und freezes when the workstation is idle. Clients are WinXP SP3 with latest updates, office 2k3, sep11. The Novell Client and the ZCM Client is installed via runonce after image restore. If the ZCM Client is not installed the system runs perfect no freezes and no bsods.

Sounds like the issue that relates to bugs in the Endpoint Protection part
of the agent. I have heard that there are a couple of patches for this,
but you have to have a SR open.

There is a new ZESM patch in the works, which could resolve this issue, though I do not have the details around when it's scheduled for arrival.

Have you tried to install the ZCM11 agent but leave SEP out of it?

Re: Random BSOD and freezes after Agent Installatiation

Thanks for your answers.

Without SEP the Agent runs fine. SR is already open.

I tried to boot in safe mode but I can't stop the service. The service could only be stopped by reinstalling the agent and deactivating the ZESservice before the restart.
Deactivating the ZESM feature on the server doesn't help. The new agent without the ZESM feature was generated over the web interface. After the Installation the ZESservice is running again and I got a BSOD.
Is there a way to deactivate the ZESM service through the registry? I edited the registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ZESService" "Start"=dword:00000002" from automatic (2) to disabled (4) but the key change to default after refresh.

Re: Random BSOD and freezes after Agent Installatiation

It sounds like we're having a similar issue. My workstations with the ZCM
11 agent on them (Windows XP) are having random reboots. We get a black
screen and an immediate reboot, just as if you hit a reset button on the
machine. ZESService.exe seems to have high CPU utilization as well. We
only run ZCM standard as well. ZESM is "Deactivated" under the licensing
area in ZCC.

Unfortunately, we don't have any support entitlements, so opening an SR
isn't an option. Do we know when these patches will become public?

Thanks!

Re: Random BSOD and freezes after Agent Installatiation

Hi,

Damn i'm having this BSOD's also on deploying my ENGL Image (Windows xp Sp3, ZCM11 with Endpoint SEC)
I'm investigation this problem for about 4 weeks. Had Sr's with ENGL and VMWARE, but i could know it. ZESM!
Mostly i see this error on virtual machines within vmware esxi. Exactly the same STOP error ( STOP: 0x1000008e )
And very random. I also see BSOD's on workstations when i put in an usb stick for the first times.

I know there are newer development releases of ZCM Endpoint Agent ( i have them), but that's a setup for after deploying windows. Not yet receiving an version that i can merge with existing adaptive agent deployment packages. I'm still busy with Novell with another ZESM bug. (sandisk cruzer pc hung bug).

Maybe you should have a look to MS11-011: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel could allow elevation of privilege

We have identified an incompatibility between this update and certain older versions of the Intel and AMD graphics drivers. Both Intel and AMD have posted updated drivers that resolve this issue.
I also tested 2 to new ZESM-Agent, but both create BSOD on some of our notebooks. Novell Support is working on it (I hope)

Re: Random BSOD and freezes after Agent Installatiation

I don't have that Update installed, and the only thing i think is that ZESM is the problem. Never had problems before with zcm10, and the day of migrating to zcm11 with endpoint security enabled the problems were there!.

Re: Random BSOD and freezes after Agent Installatiation

Same here. Nothing has changed except going from ZCM 10 to 11 on the client
side. ZCM 11 clients experience the random BSOD/reboot issue. It doesn't
even matter if they were freshly imaged or simply updated. Yes, you can go
through and mess with disabling the ZESService, but I hear it's needed for
Location Awareness. I'm checking Novell's site each day, waiting for a fix
of some kind. We can't afford to open an SR just for this.

Re: Random BSOD and freezes after Agent Installatiation

There are updates zesm agents but those are not official , those are FTF's, and it's also a manual setup, i'm still waiting for a final zesm agent that will fix all of my problems with zesm and get an zesm agent that i can integrate into my adaptive agent deployment. Still busy on with my SR's.
