I was told best practice is to reindex/reorg indexes weekly and shrink monthly. In the sql database which tables/indexes need to reindex/reorganized?

What database? Sybase, Oracle MSSQL.

That would depend, mostly on the fragmentation level of the indexes.

Last BrainShare there was an excellent session on database tuning/troubleshooting (TT374 - Novell ZENworks Database Maintenance Best Practices). You can still get the slides for that presentation here : https://www.brainshareslc.com/2013/connect/sessionDetail.ww?SESSION_ID=1825
(p.s. as the certificate for the site has just expired -last month, you'll get a browser warning. It's safe to ignore for this site.)

One other thing that could make a big difference for MSSQL, was to disable autoshrink (if it has been enabled for the database).

Anyway, have a read through the pdf... lots of good info!

Cheers,
Willem
