Technician Application

I noticed in the 2017 Update 4 patch notes that there is a fix for the Technician Application where it doesn't start if CMD access is prohibited. We are on Update 3 currently, but we're seeing an issue where Technician Application won't launch whether I have Administrative CMD access or not. Some machines work fine while others don't. I'm in the process of moving to Update 4, but not positive this will fix my issue, so decided to go ahead and post here for a possible solution.

I don't remember having an issue with any Updates before Update 3.

Re: Technician Application

Still seeing this on Update 4, also. Just machines here and there. Not sure how widespread. Right-click on tray, click on Technician Application, and nothing happens. Everything else appears functional.

Re: Technician Application

This is really nothing other than the app "ZenNotifyIcon.exe" (Yeah I know...the name does not line up.....but really it's legacy from 11.4.x when they were one and the same....)
You can try running the EXE manually instead of launching from the System Tray Icon.

Note: Sometimes when running manually, it may need to be run "twice" to open. Seems the 1st time it will load to memory if not there and the 2nd time start.
Normally it auto-starts in the Run key....I presume just to make loading faster later....

Re: Technician Application

Digging into this today, I noticed that I also couldn't run any ZAC command. Got an internal command not known or similar. When I looked at the PATH variables, it had:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Novell\ZENworks\binC:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Shared

I split the two lines and then ZAC and the Technician Application are now both working. Not sure how or when that variable got merged, but pushing out a GPP now to delete the wrong path, then Update with the two separate paths.

Good to know about the ZenNotify. Didn't realize it was still the same.
