Unable to obtain the policy definitions from policy server

Error "Unable to obtain the policy definitions from the policy service." for all devices and lots of listings of this error

I do not have any windows group policies defined in zenworks, only a remote control policy and explorer config policy.

Can someone explain what the error means?

Thanks.

Re: Unable to obtain the policy definitions from policy server

Are the policies applied at all or it is not applied ... ? ...

First thing to check would be if you are able to connect to the server from the managed device or not... If not then could you run the same thing with debug level set as Debug and Above and look into the managed device logs of one of the machines ...

Thanks

Re: Unable to obtain the policy definitions from policy server

In my case it turned out to be my closest server rules. When I
configured them, I checked the box for exclude the default rule. When I
went in and unchecked this box and refreshed my workstations, all was
good again.

Re: Unable to obtain the policy definitions from policy server

It's under Configuration - Infrastructure Mgmt and then Closest Server
rules. When you create a rule, there is a checkbox option right under
it's name to exclude the Default Closest Server Rule.

Re: Unable to obtain the policy definitions from policy serv

thanks for that info, checked that option and it was not set, I gather this is because we have only one Zen10 Server...so would this rule even apply?

UPDATE:
- called tech support on this error and was told:
"this error is a BUG and unless something is wrong I should disregard this error"
- well that is fine except how do I know something is wrong if the errors cannot be trusted.
- thanks novell support for the non-help.

Re: Unable to obtain the policy definitions from policy server

Well if it's a "Bug", then it should go away in a future update.
You should ask them what patch this defect is expected to be fixed in as
well as a link to a TID for the issue.
This way you can use the TID to track when the defect is fixed. At that
point you should no longer see the error unless there is a real problem.

..yet I've just been told that the only policy issues known are around Windows Group Policy and 'we are not aware of an issue that the agent does not get the general policy definitions at all from the server' in response to me having the same errors as people here.

I've been asked to send in workstation debug logs which i'm doing now, but I am tempted to apply 10.1.1 and see what happens...

Re: Unable to obtain the policy definitions from policy serv

UPDATE:
- the tech I am dealing with say that a resolution to this issue if in a patch would not be till some time in the new year.

Really this software is getting to be really buggy, and a waste of time. I am seriously looking at other products or just going with the realvnc client for remote control....Wasting too much time beta testing this software.....

That is pretty much how we are feeling as well. We have been on ZCM 10 for six months or so, and are not getting the value from it that we had intended. More time is spent troubleshooting errors, contacting novell support, and loading patches than actually implementing routines such as patch management, imaging, etc.. Each release seems to help (at least for us), but we are still flushing out bugs.
