Windows 10 Roaming Profiles

Hello,

this is my first post and kind of my last hope...

I am at a German university and we are currently running Windows 7 Pro with Novell Client und Zenworks, using Roaming Profiles and Folder Redirection. Our plan is to migrate to Windows 10, but here the problems start.
For the past 6 months we have been trying to get Roaming Profiles running with Windows 10 - without success. We tried every solution we could find on the internet - nothing works for us.

Here is our setup:

  • Windows 10 LTSB 2016 (based on Anniversary 1607, all available updates installed)
  • OES Client
  • Zenworks Client 11.4.2.x
  • Folder Redirection via Group Policy for Documents, Downloads, Pictues etc.

When a new user logs in for the first time everything works fine, but on further logins the startmenu does not pop up, neither does the information center on the right. When trying to change the background an error regarding ms-settings:personalization-background occurs.

Did anybody run into the same issues and manage to solve the problem?

Thanks for your help.
Best regards
Mathias

Which OES Client exactly please?

Hmm. Not current. Especially with Windows10 I would personally try to be
as current as possible.

ETC? What about the Desktop? Local or remote?

Sorry to be insisting. What error?

My first line of attack would be lan traces of course, if that doesn't
bring a clue next would be procmon. Most certainly some file access in
the profile is failing, again most likely due to locking errors. That
said, don't forget AV software...

Re: Windows 10 Roaming Profiles

Hey,

thank you for your answer.

OES Client ist the latest available Client for Open Enterprise Server 2 SP4 (IR7a).

Worth a try. The ZenWorks server is on 11.4, so we went with the same Client version...

mrosen;2473751 wrote:

etc is Music, Videos and a custom Templates/Themes folder
Desktop is roamed, but users are strictly advised not to store anything on their desktops, except for links.

Full error message is:

ms-settings:personalization-background
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.

Same error occurs when trying to open the display options from desktop and some other settings.

AV is Windows Defender, gonna investigate further...

Yeah, but the current 11.4 version is 11.4.3. Of course, there's also
Zenworks 2017 now...

That's odd, as this points to a registry issue in the HKLM branch, which
of course isn't even part of the roaming profile.

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\DesktopBackground\Shell\Personalize

That said, I'm not sure if this is truly a roaming profile issue at all.

Re: Windows 10 Roaming Profiles

See - https://forums.novell.com/showthread.php/504833-Roaming-profiles-Startmenu-problem-under-Windows-10

In Summary - Windows 10 simply does not work properly with Roaming profiles....specifically the Start Menu and perhaps some Tile Data.

When you read thru, there are some MS docs, showing how to EXCLUDE those areas from roaming.
There are another set of steps on how to Hack the Roaming process so they DO roam.

But either way.....it will be a hackfest to get it to work, since clearly MS knows it does not work properly and does not care.......
Would not be shocked if they just disabled the ability entirely in a future update.

Re: Windows 10 Roaming Profiles

Thanks for your answers.

We hoped, someone with similar infrastructure solved the issue....
There seem to be many people out there who solved the problem (or claim to have solved it) by setting the registry keys "ExcludeProfileDirs" and "SpecialRoamingOverrideAllowed". That did not work for us, so we thought the problem is specific to our Novell infrastructure.

Thanks and best regards

Re: Windows 10 Roaming Profiles

ZCM simply enables the the Windows Settings.....
The actual ROAMING is done by Windows.

If nothing was roaming, there could possibly be something there with the setup.....
In your example, where just parts of the profile are roaming.....is really outside the scope of even the GPO settings.
